This book aims to make Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) accessible to the modern reader by refashioning the great scientist's masterpiece "Discourses and Mathematical Demonstrations Relating to Two New Sciences" in today's language. Galileo Galilei stands as one of the most important figures in history, not simply for his achievements in astronomy, physics, and engineering and for revolutionizing science and the scientific method in general, but also for the role that he played in the (still ongoing) drama concerning entrenched power and its desire to stifle any knowledge that may threaten it. Therefore, it is important that today's readers come to understand and appreciate what Galilei accomplished and wrote. But the mindset that shapes how we see the world today is quite different from the mindset -- and language -- of Galilei and his contemporaries. Another obstacle to a full understanding of Galilei's writings is posed by the countless historical, philosophical, geometrical, and linguistic references he made, along with his often florid prose, with its blend of Italian and Latin. De Angelis' new rendition of the work includes translations of the original geometrical figures into algebraic formulae in modern notation and allows the non-specialist reader to follow the thread of Galileo's thought and in a way that was barely possible until now.

Edoardo Benvenuto was born in Genoa on December 11, 1940. From 1965 to 1974 Edoardo Benvenuto worked at the Istituto Ligure Ricerche Economiche e Sociali (ILRES) as a researcher in Urban Studies, and also had an illustrious academic career in the Faculty of Engineering at Genoa University. In 1975 he was called to teach at the new Faculty of Architecture in Genoa; he became ist Dean in 1979 and remained in this post until 1997. While carrying out his institutional work, Benvenuto also maintained his interests in other studies concerning scientific, philosophic and theological thought. In recognition of his great devotion to work both as a teacher and researcher, in 1996 he was elected member of the UNESCO Committee for Exact Sciences; he also collaborated with the Committee for Culture. In 1997 the Order of Architects in Genoa made him an honorary member of the "Roll of Honour". In 1998 he became President of the Ligurian Academy of Science and Letters. He died in Genoa on November 27, 1998. On the first anniversary of the death of Edoardo Benvenuto, the Association "Associazione Benvenuto" chose to commemorate his scientific personality by holding an International Seminar "Homage to Edoardo Benvenuto" in Genoa from November 29, to December 1, 1999. On that occasion scholars of structural mechanics, architectural restoration and history of science, mathematics, architecture and construction presented the results of their research, thus reflecting the multiplicity of the interests he cultivated. With these proceedings, the Edoardo Benvenuto Association wishes to add its contribution to the research programme begun in 1993 with the Symposium "Between Mechanics and Architecture", organised by E. Benvenuto and P. Radelet de Grave and held during the XIX International Congress of History of Science, Zaragoza 1993.

Di Antonino Giuffrè ricordiamo tutti, in primo luogo, l'amicizia e l'umanità. In secondo luogo, come suoi discepoli, il grande impegno didattico, istituzionale ed accademico da Lui profuso nelle Facoltà di Architettura: prima quella della Sapienza e poi quella di Roma Tre di cui, a sessanta anni già compiuti, fu uno dei fondatori. Infine, l'ampiezza, di metodo prima ancora che di contenuti, della sua produzione scientifica iniziata dal tema del progetto di grandi opere in cemento armato, con Carlo Cestelli Guidi, per proseguire con il calcolo automatico delle strutture, la dinamica stocastica e l'ingegneria sismica. Questo volume, tuttavia, ha come preciso obiettivo quello di mettere in luce il periodo finale della produzione intellettuale e scientifica di Antonino Giuffrè, dal 1985 al 1997. È il periodo della piena maturità, della compiuta sintesi tra i temi di Ricerca e la Didattica nella Facoltà di Architettura, dell'approccio multidisciplinare al problema della conservazione del patrimonio costruito: scienza e tecnica delle costruzioni ma anche restauro dei monumenti, storia dell'architettura e delle tecniche costruttive. È il periodo interrotto dalla prematura scomparsa che non ha dato modo di valorizzare e sistematizzare a pieno un vasto patrimonio di idee e conoscenze che ancora oggi, al di là della ristretta cerchia degli addetti ai lavori, non è conosciuto come meriterebbe nei contenuti e nel metodo. Il libro propone una lettura del costruito storico che è insieme un viaggio nello spazio, Genova e in parte la Liguria, e nel tempo, dall’epoca medievale alle soglie della contemporaneità, riflettendo una concezione dello sviluppo del costruire caratterizzata da permanenze, consuetudini, tradizioni, riprese e anche imitazioni. Dall’organizzazione del volume in schede tematiche traspare una tensione quasi enciclopedica, tuttavia, il rigoroso e serrato gioco di rimandi tra i termini che denotano i vari elementi costruttivi e i materiali, i ricchi e puntuali riferimenti bibliografici incrociati tra le schede e la presenza del fattore tempo, al loro interno e nella parte finale del volume, superano la meccanica dissezione autoptica dell’edificio esistente e la sua eccessiva frammentazione analitica. Il volume, per questo, offre anzitutto un contributo diretto alla conoscenza del costruito storico genovese e ligure, ma fornisce anche interessanti spunti metodologici per analoghe ricerche in altri contesti geografici e culturali (tratto dalla prefazione di Stefano F. Musso).
