The subject of the present book is the theme of Edom in the Old Testament. In the four long oracles against Edom (Isa. 34, Jer. 49.7-22, Ezek. 35, Obadiah), this nation serves as Israel's antagonist and the representative of the enemy nations. Edom also appears in the book of Genesis: Jacob's brother Esau is the patriarch of the Edomites and Esau himself is called Edom as well (Gen. 25-36). Although there is no such negative estimation of Edom as in the prophecies, here too Edom represents the nations, and serves as Israel's opponent. This study discusses the origin and development of Edom's exceptional role. It extensively analyses the connections between Obadiah (the only one of the four major oracles in which, like in Genesis, Edom is called Israel's brother), the other oracles, and Genesis. It sketches the literary history of these texts and discusses the possible historical background of the conceptions they share. Can the similarities in Edom's role be explained by assuming the same historical background for the two sets of texts? If so, why do the major oracles against Edom present an extremely negative, and the Jacob-Esau stories a relatively positive picture of Edom?

This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1888 edition. Excerpt: ... that the number was large. It has ever been true, and ever will be, that of all nations, and kindreds, and peoples, and tongues, all of who fear God and work righteousness are accepted of Him. CHAPTER XIII. THE HERODIAN FAMILY. HOUGH many of the members of the Herodian family are called Jews, from their submitting to the rites and embracing the faith of that people, they are admitted to be Edomites and this little book would be incomplete without some notice of them, j shall, however, in accordance with the plan of this work, confine my remarks almost exclusively to those members of the family to whom reference is made in the Bible. The first Edomite of whom we read in the New Testament is Herod, falsely surnamed, The Great. He was the second son of Antipator, a clever Idumaean noble, who was alike noted for his base sycophancy towards Rome, his inveterate hatred of the Asmonaian line, his insatiate ambition, and his unscrupulousness in satisfying the demands of that ambition. Herod inherited his father's ability, his father's ambition, his father's unscrupulousness, and far more than his father's cruelty. Does Antigonus become obnoxious to Herod? He has the address to cause his life blood to flow beneath the rods and axe of the Roman lictor. Does the young Aristobolus become a favorite with the people? He is, as it were, accidentally drowned in a tank. Does Asmonian blood flow in the veins of two of his own sons? To allay his fears he strangles them. Does the beautiful Marrianne excite his jealousy? She dies by the axe of the executioner. Such was the character of him who reigned in Judea, when Christ our Lord was born in Bethlehem. Herod was at that time not far from fifty-five years old and had been a public man about forty years....

"Immediately before the siege of Jerusalem by Titus, 20,000 Idumaeans were admitted into the holy city ... from this time the Edomites as a separate people, disappear from the page of history." -Mary Witter In 1888, Mary L. T. Witter, of Berwick, Nova Scotia and author of religious works published "The Edomites: Their History as Gathered from the Holy Scriptures." As noted by the title, in this book Witter compiles the history of the Edomites as gathered from the Biblical sources. In introducing her book Witter notes that "surely the study of a people to whom reference is made-sometimes frequent reference -in twenty-four of the books of the Bible cannot be without profit. That the history of the Edomites is extremely fragmentary is admitted, but that circumstance has been to my mind an incentive to attempt the compilation." After going through the Biblical accounts of the Edomites in great detail, from Esau to the siege of Jerusalem by Titus, Witter concludes that "the Scriptures plainly teach that the great Supreme is a God of justice as well as a God of mercy. The destruction of the ante-deluvians, of the cities of the plain, and the story of the Amalekites may be adduced as instances in proof of this assertion. But in the history of no people is God's displeasure against sin, and his inflexible justice more legibly written than in that of the Edomites." Contents: I. THEIR ANCESTRY. II. Rebekah's Journey. III. THE BIRTH OF ESAU-HE SELLS HIS BIRTHRIGHT. IV. ESAU IS DEPRIVED OF HIS FATHER'S BLESSING. V. THE LAND OF EDOM VI. ESAU'S INTERVIEW WITH JACOB AT THE JABBOK. VII. THE HORITES. VIII. THE DUKEDOMS AND THE EARLY KINGDOM OF EDOM. IX. DOEG X. HADAD. XI. EDOM, A DEPENDENCY OF JUDAH. XII. THE KINGDOM OF EDOM. XIII. THE HERODIAN FAMILY. XIV. THE HERODIAN FAMILY-(Continued.) XV. CONCLUSION. The Hebrew word Edom means "red", and is derived from the name of its founder, Esau, the elder son of the Hebrew patriarch Isaac, because he was born "red all over". As a young adult, he sold his birthright to his brother Jacob for "red pottage". The Tanakh describes the Edomites as descendants of Esau. Perhaps referencing this familial connection, the Old Testament commands: "Thou shalt not abhor an Edomite; for he is thy brother." ~Deuteronomy 23:7 Edom was an ancient kingdom in Transjordan located between Moab to the northeast, the Arabah to the west and the Arabian Desert to the south and east. Most of its former territory is now divided between Israel and Jordan. Edom appears in written sources relating to the late Bronze Age and to the Iron Age in the Levant, such as the Hebrew Bible and Egyptian and Mesopotamian records. The study of the history of Edomites has recently gained popularity among Black Hebrew Israelites (also called Black Hebrews, African Hebrew Israelites, and Hebrew Israelites), groups of Black Americans who believe that they are descendants of the ancient Israelites. Black Hebrews adhere in varying degrees to the religious beliefs and practices of both Christianity and Judaism. One belief often expressed is a belief that Europeans are descendants of Esau, also known as Edom. (Genesis 25:25). Other books by Witter include: * A Book for the Young: Being a History of the Kings who Ruled over God's Ancient People (1870) * Angels (1900)

This study offers a canonical reading of the Esau and Edom traditions, examining the portrayal of Esau and Edom in Genesis, Deuteronomy, and the prophetic material. First, it is argued that the depiction of Esau and his descendants in Genesis and Deuteronomy is, on the whole, positive. Second, it is put forward that Edom is portrayed negatively by the prophets for violating their kin, and for disrespecting the divine apportioning of the lands. Finally, it is suggested that these traditions have resonance with one another based on recurring literary and theological motifs, heuristically framed as brotherhood and inheritance.

And these are the names of the clans of Esau by their families, by their places, by their names: clan Timnah, clan Alvah, clan Jetheth, clan Aholibamah, clan Elah, clan Pinon, clan Kenaz, clan Teman, clan Mibzar, clan Magdiel, clan Iram." - Genesis 36 The ancient Edomites were just one of the many cultures inhabiting the Levant during the Late Bronze Age and early Iron Age, but they remain known thousands of years later thanks to mentions in the Old Testament. The Bible indicates that the Edomites and their kingdom had a complex relationship first with the Hebrews and then with the Israelites. According to the Bible, the Edomites were descended from a different branch of the Israelites' family tree and as such were treated as "brothers" at times, but at other times they were sworn enemies. Given those facts, understanding the true nature of the Edomites and their culture has been somewhat problematic for historians due to the lack of source material. Most of the references to the Edomites come from the Bible, which, while historically accurate about many points, is clearly biased against the enemies of Israel. Thus, scholars have also turned to texts from the Egyptians and Assyrians and excavations from the Levant to form a more comprehensive image of a culture that in many ways was very similar to that of the Israelites. Such assessments reveal that the Edomites' origins can be traced back to the wider Canaanite culture that was dominant in the Levant in the Late Bronze Age. During that time, the Edomites came into contact with the Egyptians and also reencountered the Hebrews. After coming back into contact with the Hebrews, the Edomites seemingly faded from the historical record until the creation of the Kingdom of Israel in the early 1st millennium BCE. The Edomites then played a subservient and clearly inferior role to the Israelites, at least politically, until the time was right and they could make a major play for their longtime rival's land. Ultimately, the Edomites flourished for several centuries only to suffer the same fate as the Israelites. They were swept up in the storm of wars and migrations that characterized the Near East from the end of the Bronze Age until the dominance of the Achaemenid Persian Empire. The Edomites: The History and Legacy of the Kingdom of Edom in the Ancient Near East examines how the culture flourished in parts of modern Jordan and Israel before the Babylonian conquest. Along with pictures depicting important people, places, and events, you will learn about Edom like never before.
