This volume gathers, analyses, discusses and evaluates results of current research on arts and cultural education in Europe, focusing on the challenges of cultural diversity. Cultural diversity is an increasingly characteristic feature of contemporary societies. Groups with different ethnic, social or cultural backgrounds coexist, interact and merge. The challenges of cultural diversity – its innovative potential as well as tensions and conflicts – are reflected in transnational discourses on education, culture, democracy, and citizenship. Transcultural approaches, multicultural education, and intercultural learning are key concepts. The same challenges are reflected in arts and cultural education within and outside schools, in teachers’ and artists’ training, cultural and educational policies, and research. The thirteen chapters in this book report on nine countries represented in the European Network of Observatories in the Field of Arts and Cultural Education (ENO). They showcase good practices in research and teaching, foster the exchange of experiences, stimulate researchers and stakeholders and give insights into their professional practices.

From an international and comparative perspective, this book first presents theoretical and conceptual foundations for seriously considering cultural diversity. The book also compares intercultural approaches and debates generated in countries as diverse as the United States, Canada, Brazil, Switzerland and France. For each national context, the book addresses both the historical roots of intercultural approaches and the concrete initiatives driven by educational policies for their implementation in schools and classrooms. Finally, the book presents discussions surrounding the treatment of linguistic or religious diversity in schools, the emergence of global citizenship education and the key role of teachers in intercultural approaches. This is an open access book.

This volume represents the result of cooperation between representatives of different academic disciplines, particularly researchers dealing with multiculturalism, cross-cultural education, civil education, penitentiary pedagogy in the context of global and European cultural and demographic transformations, and ethnopedagogues, sociologists and historians. The contributors here are united by a common interest in cross-border interpretations of cultural differences within pedagogical and social discourse. As such, the book presents in-depth and versatile reflections on the current ways of conceptualising multiculturalism as expressed across Europe. Each chapter includes a conclusion indicating the areas in which the respective study will have a particular impact. The book will be of interest to experts, practitioners and teachers dealing with multicultural issues; penitentiary tutors and authorities working with foreign prisoners; theoreticians of contemporary pedagogical discourse involving cultural, sociological and political issues; and the general reader attentive to processes of European integration and their related aspects, including cultural diversity, globalization, and religious radicalization.

This case study contributes to discussions about religious education and its relation to young people's concerns and to social cohesion in Estonia. However, the book also makes an important contribution to the international debate about religions and education. It brings together empirical studies conducted in Estonia in the framework of a major European project, REDCo (Religion in Education: A contribution to Dialogue or a factor of Conflict in transforming societies of European Countries?) setting the research in the context of wider international debates. The mixed methods research investigates the attitudes of 14-16 years old Estonians towards religion and religious diversity, exploring their views on the role of the school in promoting dialogue and tolerance among representatives of different worldviews, and establishing the ways in which their experience of religious education affects their views on these issues. Dr Schihalejev draws on three of her empirical studies, each utilising a different methodology. The qualitative and the quantitative studies investigate students' attitudes to religion and religious diversity, while two contrasting classroom-based studies of religious education explore patterns of interaction, both using video-ethnography and incident-analysis respectively to collect and interpret the data. Grounded in the findings of the empirical studies, the author explores dialogical pedagogies for non-confessional approaches to religious education and discusses policies for strengthening active tolerance in the school context. Dr. Olga Schihalejev is a researcher and a lecturer in the Faculty of Theology at Tartu University, Estonia. She has worked as a teacher of religious education and has written teaching-learning resources for students in Estonia. She is a board member of the Estonian RE Teachers' Association, actively involved in improving the national syllabus for RE and organising annual conferences for RE teachers in Estonia. She worked on the EC Framework 6 project REDCo (Religion in Education. A contribution to dialogue or a factor of conflict in transforming societies of European Countries). Within the REDCo Project her research was on how religion is perceived by young people in a secular context. Additionally she is interested in the perception of religion and tolerance by different ethnic groups in Estonia. Her current research interest is the study of the competences young teachers of different subjects have for implemeting values education.

Planning For Cultural Diversity written by Christine Inglis and has been published by United Nations Educational, Scientific & Cultural Organization this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2008 with Business & Economics categories.

How to ensure educational equality, rights to cultural maintenance and full social participation of minority groups, while ensuring social harmony and national development within a democratic society, is a major challenge for education policy-makers. Traditionally, this is viewed as a debate for pedagogues. Nevertheless, there are important implications for educational planners and managers. Given the many varied patterns of ethnic diversity within individual societies and their different educational traditions, no one set of educational responses is universally applicable. However, as discussed in the booklet, there are certain readily identifiable processes to follow in developing responses to cultural diversity. The three main foci of policy responses put forward are: the organisation and structures of education; curricula, pedagogy and choice of language; and relations between the school and the community.

Negotiating Ethnic Diversity And National Identity In History Education written by Helen Mu Hung Ting and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2023-05-26 with Education categories.

This edited book explores the problems and challenges of negotiating the representation of ethnic minorities within history education. It investigates how states balance the (non-)acknowledgement of the reality of cultural or religious diversity, and the promotion of a point of convergence in history education to foster national identity. Shifting our attention away from the intractable challenges posed by post-conflict countries for reconciliation, the contributors draw attention to the need to explore ways to prevent or pre-empt conflicts and exclusion through history education, which could contribute to developing a more sustainable culture of peace. Drawing on a wide range of contexts and sources, this book asks how history education could contribute to forming critical, historically informed, and committed young citizens. The book will be of interest to students and academics working on themes such as nationalism, citizenship, ethnicity, history education, multicultural education, peace studies and area studies, as well as practitioners in the fields of history, social studies, civic or citizenship.
