Ackelsberg narra os esforços da Federação Mulheres Livres para criar uma organização de alcance nacional constituída por e para as mulheres da classe trabalhadora, com o objetivo de prepará-las para ocupar seu lugar na revolução em curso e na nova sociedade que se avizinhava — e que, infelizmente, foi detida pelo avanço do fascismo. *** Comecei esta pesquisa muitos anos atrás, num contexto político bastante distinto do atual. Quando este livro foi publicado pela primeira vez, nos Estados Unidos, em 1991, o Muro de Berlim tinha caído havia pouco, a União Soviética estava no mesmo caminho, Nelson Mandela tinha acabado de ser solto da prisão em Robben Island, e o Brasil se recuperava dos anos de ditadura militar. Eram os primórdios das revoluções digital e tecnológica que transformariam as economias pelo mundo, e mal se podia imaginar que assistiríamos a manifestações contra a globalização — a Organização Mundial do Comércio (omc) sequer havia sido criada. Havia muito trabalho pela frente para enfrentarmos a desigualdade e a injustiça em todo o mundo, mas, ao mesmo tempo, havia também um sentimento de esperança e a expectativa por mudanças. Não vejo nenhuma ironia no fato de que a edição brasileira de Free Women of Spain seja publicada agora, num momento em que tanto o Brasil como os Estados Unidos enfrentam a ascensão de coalizões de direita, não tão diferentes daquelas que provocaram a Guerra Civil Espanhola. Apesar dos esforços dos movimentos sociais populares de oposição, em ambos os países candidatos pseudopopulistas tiveram êxito nas eleições presidenciais ao apelar para os altos níveis de alienação e descrédito dos políticos tradicionais, afirmando que tirariam o país das mãos de elites corruptas que, por muito tempo, foram indiferentes aos problemas da população. Ainda que a eleição de Jair Bolsonaro, em 2018, não tenha sido, talvez, tão inesperada quanto a de Donald Trump, em 2016, o fato é que parece que estamos testemunhando a ascensão de governos autoritários e movimentos neofascistas pelo mundo. Ativistas em ambos os países (e em muitos outros) temem pelo futuro de suas instituições democráticas relativamente novas — e também por aquelas mais antigas —, e se perguntam como transformar a agenda pública e o equilíbrio do poder político para começar a recuperar espaços perdidos.
