Benedicto Galvão foi o primeiro presidente negro da OAB-SP. Como no pós-Abolição um não branco infiltrou-se ou foi infiltrado em instituições "onde a elite branca coroava seus estudos e sonhava os sonhos de sucesso e poder?" A quem estava reservado o título de bacharel? Quais indivíduos teriam as condições de acessar e permanecer em um curso superior como o de Ciências Jurídicas oferecido na Faculdade de Direito de São Paulo no final do século XIX? Mas seria possível a um menino negro, filho de uma mulher pobre e negra, conquistar tal posição? Como? Por quais caminhos? Em quais condições? São respostas a questões como essas que Rodrigues nos apresenta neste livro. Utilizando o cotejamento de fontes diversas (revistas, jornais, literatura, documentos escolares, entre outros), é reconstituída nesta obra, parte da trajetória escolar de Benedicto Galvão, criança, negra, nascida na cidade de Itu, interior paulista, em 1881: como chegou à Escola Normal de São Paulo e depois acessou à Faculdade de Direito de São Paulo, trajeto esse trilhado entre o final do século XIX e início do século XX, e, ainda, algumas das estratégias e táticas utilizadas por ele, Benedicto Galvão, por sua família e outros atores que o auxiliaram no acesso e na permanência nessas importantes instituições de ensino, perfazendo essa trajetória notável para a época. Averiguou-se quais fatores propiciaram a "infiltração" e a permanência desse estudante negro nesses espaços de educação formal, possibilitando-o chegar a exercer a função de presidente da Ordem dos Advogados do Brasil, seção São Paulo, em 1940. Com essa obra, surge mais um capítulo na recém-inaugurada historiografia da História da Educação dos Negros no Brasil, demonstrando que a população negra não experienciou apenas perdas e impossibilidades de acesso à educação, mas também a inserção dessa parcela no âmbito social e educacional brasileiro, o que contribui para retirar da margem da historiografia tradicional as trajetórias de êxito escolar e ascensão social de negras e negros, como a de Benedicto Galvão.
