La enérgica evolución de la educación abierta y a distancia en estos últimos años está provocando un cambio de cultura en el contexto educativo. Esta evolución supone el replanteamiento de cuestiones presuntamente superadas, y está obligando a mirar la realidad educativa desde otra perspectiva. En una aproximación básica pero rigurosa a este fenómeno, hemos optado por iniciar el abordaje a esta temática a partir de las diferentes concepciones que se pueden tener sobre la educación abierta y a distancia. Dejamos en un segundo plano el tratamiento supletorio de la educación abierta y a distancia subyugada a la educación presencial y nos centramos en la misma entendiéndola como un sistema que aporta rasgos diferenciales y únicos que se integran en un sistema más grande en la búsqueda de una educación flexible de calidad. Enseñar y aprender utilizando sistemas abiertos y a distancia con el uso de tecnología de diferente naturaleza es hoy un hecho en expansión, que necesita de profesionales formados y críticos que avancen en el desarrollo de sistemas válidos y eficaces en el marco de la sociedad de la información y del conocimiento.
