La primera edición en inglés de La sociedad desescolarizada de Iván Illich fue comercializada por la editorial Harper & Row en 1971 bajo el título Deschooling Society. En poco tiempo aparecieron traducciones del libro en diferentes idiomas, incluido el castellano en 1974. En este libro Illich denunció la falacia que envolvía a los sistemas escolares que se fundamentaban en la creencia de que la mayor parte del saber era el resultado de la enseñanza escolarizada. Su reivindicación era que las personas adquirían la mayor parte de sus conocimientos fuera de la escuela. Para una buena comprensión de lo que acontecía no era necesaria la mediación de estructuras institucionales rígidas. Lo que planteó Illich en su obra era que el ser humano volviera a encontrar el sentido de su responsabilidad personal cuando aprendía y enseñaba. No obstante, la carencia de imaginación y de un lenguaje apropiado, impedía que la frustración que crecía a la sombra de las escuelas pudiera dar paso a la construcción de instituciones alternativas. Illich vislumbró un escenario futuro donde cada organización social proporcionaría la instrucción necesaria para sus actividades concretas. A partir de 1976 Illich operó un giro en sus pensamientos. Abordó otras temáticas y buscó perspectivas de estudio diferentes para continuar con su crítica a las instituciones modernas. Desde una perspectiva más histórica, retomó puntualmente la crítica de las instituciones educativas a partir de postulados que diferían de los planteados en La sociedad desescolarizada. Tres textos clave en este sentido son "Los valores vernáculos", texto publicado como capítulo dentro del libro El trabajo fantasma de 1981; "Historia del Homo Educandus", conferencia impartida en París con motivo del V World Council of Comparative Education Societies en 1984; y "Por un estudio de la mentalidad alfabética", ponencia presentada en 1986 en el congreso de la American Education Research Association en San Francisco y que formó parte del libro En el espejo del pasado. Conferencias y discursos, 1978-1990. Estos textos han sido incluidos en esta edición en la medida que arrojan luz para el estudio de la obra de Illich en su conjunto.
