'Wij hebben in Nederland toch nog nooit een seriemoordenaar gehad? Serieverkrachters, dat wel maar...'De commissaris keek op van achter zijn papieren. 'We hebben 18 moorden die allemaal met elkaar in verband staan. Lijkt me een serie.' Marcel Sturing staarde voor zich uit en dacht even na. 'Ehm, het Beest van Horkstede... Nee, Harkstede. Dat was een Nederlandse seriemoordenaar. Willem van Eijk of Van Eck... zoiets. Vijf moorden, vrij recent nog. Er zijn er genoeg hoor maar meestal niet met zo veel slachtoffers.'"Een Leeg Bestaan:"Hij reed langzaam de straat in. Nergens een parkeerplek vrij... dan maar op de stoep. Hij parkeerde zijn auto half op het trottoir en stapte uit. Hij telde drie politieauto's, vijf agenten op straat. Hij liep naar het groepje toe. Eén van hen kwam op hem afgelopen. Machielsen? Michielsen? Een nieuwe jongen, sinds een maand werkzaam op het bureau. 'Goedemorgen inspecteur. Hopelijk heeft u goed ontbeten want het is geen fijn gezicht. Veel bloed vooral.''Een tijdje terug alweer, maar vertel.' Ze liepen samen naar de entree van het flatgebouw. Machielsen of Michielsen somde op: 'Een vrouw, begin 40. Bruut vermoord. Meerdere malen verkracht, voor of na haar dood. U ziet het zelf wel. Maar ik zou even diep ademhalen als ik u was, voor u naar binnen gaat.'" Een Klein Einde: "Een nachtclub in Amerikaanse stijl. Hoewel, eerder Berlijn... eind jaren twintig, begin jaren dertig. Aan één kant van de ruimte een grote bar, aan de andere kant een podium. Voor het podium veel tafeltjes en nog meer stoelen. Ronde tafeltjes waardoor het geheel hem opeens weer deed denken aan een western saloon. Hij rook een geur van sigaretten, en zweet. Dorre lucht van de vorige avond, hoewel... afgelopen nacht eigenlijk. Slechte ventilatie... Of ze waren nog maar net een paar uur dicht. De eigenaar, niet blij met de politieaanwezigheid, had zich boos terug getrokken. De club zou minimaal een dag gesloten zijn. Misschien zelfs langer."

Pali Metre: A Contribution to the History of Indian Literature. The present work is a study of the problems presented by the metres in the Pali Canon, seen in their historical setting as representing the Early Middle Indian phase in the development of Indian metrics. During this phase, which is regarded as corresponding to a turning point in the linguistic transition from Old Indian (Vedic) to Late Middle Indian (Apabhramsa), a number of new metres appeared and an entirely new technique of versification was developed, differing in principle from the old Vedic technique. The new technique was adopted alike for the Sanskrit and Prakrit literature of the following centuries and its understanding should lead to a better appreciation of that phase of Indian poetry too. The attempt is made to collect and assess all previous contributions to the study of the ancient Indian metres and closely related subjects. The interrelations between these connected fields have been sought, leading to mutual elucidation of problems. The language of the Pali Canon presents many difficulties which have to be investigated before we can tackle the problems of scansion, whilst the linguistic and metrical trends constantly interacted. The most significant feature of the new metres was their close connection with music, the study of which has proved to be indispensable in our research on the history of Indian literature.
