This book provides an introduction to the sociological study of midwifery. The readings have been selected to highlight the interplay between midwifery and medicine, reflecting the medicalization of childbirth. It highlights the major themes in both a historical and a current context, as well as western and non-western societies. Two major themes underlie the organization of this book: that the conception of midwifery must be broadened to encompass a sociological perspective; and that the ongoing trend toward the medicalization of midwifery is crucial to an understanding of the historical, current, and future status of midwifery. By medicalization of childbirth and midwifery the author mean the increasing tendency for women to prefer a hospital delivery to a home delivery, the increasing trend toward the use of technology and clinical intervention in childbirth, and the determination of medical practitioners to confine the role played by midwives in pregnancy and childbirth, if any, to a purely subordinate one.

Diekstra's 'wake-up-call' voor de politiek,politie,justitie en media. Op 27 januari 2011 deed René Diekstra bij de politie aangifte van verdenking van diefstal door een personeelsid van het verzorgingstehuis waar een van zijn familieleden verblijft.De aangifte betrof diefstal van geldbedragen en enkele kostbaarheden gedurende de periode mei 2009 tot en met januari 2011. De opnames waren gemaakt met een verborgen camera die hij in het appartement van het familielid had geïnstalleerd, om bewijs te verzamelen voor zijn vermoeden van herhaalde diefstal. Op 30 mei 2011 verscheen Diekstra's wekelijkse column in de krant. Onder de titel 'verzorgingstehuis of plaats delict?' deed hij het verhaal van zijn familielid en riep hij lezers op om soortgelijke ervaringen met hem te delen. Hij wist toen nog niet dat hij daarmee een storm zou ontketenen...In reactie op deze column ontving hij talloze e-mails van verontruste familieleden met vergelijkbare, schokkende ervaringen (honderd hiervan zijn opgenomen in dit'zwartboek'en geven een indringend en mogelijk representatief beeld van de situatie in Nederland. Vital Democracy outlines a theory of democracy in action, based on four elementary forms of democracy - pendulum, consensus, voter and participatory democracy - that are thoroughly analysed, compared and related to both the literature and the real world of democracy. Just like a few primary colours produce an array of shades, a few basic models of democracy appear, the author argues, to constitute a wide range of democratic variants in real life. Focusing on tried and tested democratic institutions, Frank Hendriks shows that the four models of democracy - with their divergent patterns of leadership, citizenship and governance, their inherent strengths and weaknesses - are never purely instantiated. Een boek wat laat zien dat het er triest aan toe gaat op ons eiland. In het verleden heb ik al vele misstanden beschreven. Dan denk je, kan een land nog verder dalen. Helaas is het antwoord, JA.Ja, het land Curaçao is een triest voorbeeld van rijk en arm maar ook van onderdrukking en veel vernederingen naar het volk toe. De mafia, heeft daar ook zijn aandeel in. Dan nog niet te spreken over het asociale gedrag en ook het verkrachten, verhandelen, gebruiken en mishandelen van kinderen. Niet alleen kinderen zijn het doelwit maar ook ouderen. Ouderen die te mondig zijn of misschien te veel weten maar ook ouderen die onderdanig zijn. Het boekje laat Curaçao zien vanuit zijn smalste kant maar ook van de meest onmenselijke kant. Zeker een boekje wat je niet op zal vrolijken. Het is een boekje dat laat zien wat een mondige simpele burger allemaal mee kan maken. Toch zie je een lichtpuntje en dat geeft nog een kans in deze zwarte tijden.
