De Nederlandse Vrouwenbeweging (NVB) startte in '46 als pluriforme vrouwenorganisatie, die aan het vrouw-zijn politieke betekenis wilde geven. In de daarop volgende jaren ontwikkelde de NVB zich tot een communistische organisatie van vrouwen, waarin het belang van sekse als maatschappelijk relevante categorie krachtig ontkend werd. Deze opvallende verandering in de betekenis van sekse als basis voor de organisatie is onderwerp van het proefschrift van de sociologe Withuis. Het eerste deel van het boek richt zich op de historische ontwikkelingen binnen de NVB, terwijl in het tweede deel de wijze waarop de organisatie de positie van vrouwen zag in verband gebracht wordt met de (veranderingen in) mentale waarden en gevoelens van de leden. Dit laatste gebeurt aan de hand van de thema's mentaliteit, cultuur en sekse-identiteit. Een illustratie van de vergaande verstrengeling van levensbeschouwelijk regime en persoonlijke levenssfeer vormt de NVB-campagne voor een pijnloze bevalling. Deze grondige studie, waartoe een schap aan moeilijk toegankelijk materiaal werd geraadpleegd, biedt wetenschappelijk geïnteresseerden een genuanceerd beeld van de samenhang tussen sociologische en psychologische factoren in de geschiedenis van een organisatie. Toen er in 1944 en 1945 een eind aan de Duitse bezetting van België en Nederland kwam, leek het vanzelfsprekend dat alle 'landverraders' uit de samenleving zouden worden verwijderd. Ruim 200.000 mensen werden opgepakt en opgesloten in interneringskampen. Deze massale opsluiting leidde in de tumultueuze bevrijdingsdagen tot problemen die de beeldvorming over de omgang met de Belgische 'incivieke'n en Nederlandse 'politiek delinquenten' in belangrijke mate hebben bepaald. Eindeloos opsluiten van deze mensen was in beide landen geen optie. Al snel werd besloten tot re-integratie van de grote meerderheid. Heropvoeding en 'genezing' tot 'goede vaderlanders' was daarvoor een noodzakelijke voorwaarde. Grevers onderzocht op basis van niet eerder bestudeerd archiefmateriaal hoe de Belgische en Nederlandse kampen en gevangenissen tussen 1944 en 1950 functioneerden en hoe de voormalige collaborateurs er werden voorbereid op terugkeer in de naoorlogse maatschappij. Het resultaat van dit onderzoek is een bijzonder beeld van de directe naoorlogse jaren en de omgang met `foute vaderlanders. De nieuw gevonden feiten zullen het wetenschappelijke en publieke debat over deze kwestie zonder twijfel beïnvloeden.
