Toen er in 1944 en 1945 een eind aan de Duitse bezetting van België en Nederland kwam, leek het vanzelfsprekend dat alle 'landverraders' uit de samenleving zouden worden verwijderd. Ruim 200.000 mensen werden opgepakt en opgesloten in interneringskampen. Deze massale opsluiting leidde in de tumultueuze bevrijdingsdagen tot problemen die de beeldvorming over de omgang met de Belgische 'incivieke'n en Nederlandse 'politiek delinquenten' in belangrijke mate hebben bepaald. Eindeloos opsluiten van deze mensen was in beide landen geen optie. Al snel werd besloten tot re-integratie van de grote meerderheid. Heropvoeding en 'genezing' tot 'goede vaderlanders' was daarvoor een noodzakelijke voorwaarde. Grevers onderzocht op basis van niet eerder bestudeerd archiefmateriaal hoe de Belgische en Nederlandse kampen en gevangenissen tussen 1944 en 1950 functioneerden en hoe de voormalige collaborateurs er werden voorbereid op terugkeer in de naoorlogse maatschappij. Het resultaat van dit onderzoek is een bijzonder beeld van de directe naoorlogse jaren en de omgang met `foute vaderlanders. De nieuw gevonden feiten zullen het wetenschappelijke en publieke debat over deze kwestie zonder twijfel beïnvloeden.

Since the 1970s, when the dominance of military histories of the World Wars ended, and social historical histories of conflict rose to prominence, women have come to play an increasingly important role in mainstream stories about the Second World War. Although this is undeniably a valuable development, the perspectives on women that arose have in many respects remained limiting – although in new ways. Women have been portrayed as carers, as victims (notably of sexual violence), but rarely as agents of their own fate. This volume focuses on this last group. In spite of the undeniable suffering and victimization that befell so many women during the war, for others the war also opened opportunities and awakened ambitions. The articles in this volume, which cover both Europe and Asia, bring together some of the women who took initiatives, of which they sometimes suffered the dire consequences, sometimes enjoyed the fruits.

During the Second World War, approximately 25,000 Dutchmen served within the ranks of the military branch of the German SS: the Waffen-SS. They volunteered to fight to secure the victory of Nazi Germany. These Dutch volunteers fought mainly on the Eastern Front, and to a lesser extent, within their own national borders. After the war, the Allied victors regarded them as part of a criminal organization and jointly responsible for the atrocious transgressions of the Nazi regime. In the Netherlands, these men were reviled, branded as traitors and became pariahs in their own country. Those who had devoted themselves to the Nazi regime caused so much grief to the Netherlands that they had to be held accountable. Despite their military achievements, their reputation was damaged forever. The Netherlands supplied the largest contingent of SS soldiers from the occupied North-western European territories. Who were these people? What led them to enlist, and what were the consequences of their choice? An important part of this study involves the autobiographical texts of nineteen Dutch volunteers in the Waffen-SS. These ego-documents recount their own immediate experiences and are mainly fragments from diaries, but there are also letters, individual notes, and memoirs. The ego-documents are placed within the larger historical context to provide an answer to the question of whether these men were only ideologically motivated and unconditional Nazi sympathizers, and for this, their criminal records are also researched. Among other topics, the book discusses their choice to enlist, their experiences at the front, and their involvement in genocide, providing a new perspective on the Eastern Front.

The first account of the August Trials, in which postwar Poland confronted the betrayal of Jewish citizens under Nazi rule but ended up fashioning an alibi for the past. When six years of ferocious resistance to Nazi occupation came to an end in 1945, a devastated Poland could agree with its new Soviet rulers on little else beyond the need to punish German war criminals and their collaborators. Determined to root out the “many Cains among us,” as a Poznań newspaper editorial put it, Poland’s judicial reckoning spawned 32,000 trials and spanned more than a decade before being largely forgotten. Andrew Kornbluth reconstructs the story of the August Trials, long dismissed as a Stalinist travesty, and discovers that they were in fact a scrupulous search for the truth. But as the process of retribution began to unearth evidence of enthusiastic local participation in the Holocaust, the hated government, traumatized populace, and fiercely independent judiciary all struggled to salvage a purely heroic vision of the past that could unify a nation recovering from massive upheaval. The trials became the crucible in which the Communist state and an unyielding society forged a foundational myth of modern Poland but left a lasting open wound in Polish-Jewish relations. The August Trials draws striking parallels with incomplete postwar reckonings on both sides of the Iron Curtain, suggesting the extent to which ethnic cleansing and its abortive judicial accounting are part of a common European heritage. From Paris and The Hague to Warsaw and Kyiv, the law was made to serve many different purposes, even as it failed to secure the goal with which it is most closely associated: justice.

Op basis van niet eerder geraadpleegde bronnen en getuigenissen schetst Hoving een nauwkeurig beeld van het leven van Kotalla. Wat waren zijn drijfveren? Welke gebeurtenissen in zijn leven droegen bij aan zijn ontwikkeling tot de beul van Amersfoort? Hoe kan een mens in staat zijn tot het op grote schaal vermoorden en mishandelen van gevangenen? De beschrijving van het proces tegen Kotalla geeft een ontluisterend beeld van de naoorlogse rechtspleging. Wraak speelde een belangrijke rol. Kotalla stierf 34 jaar na de oorlog in zijn cel. Een reconstructie van zijn laatste weken, dagen en uren maakt duidelijk waarom de doodzieke Duitser in gevangenschap moest sterven. Richard Hoving (1971) is historicus en journalist. Eerder publiceerde hij Het 'foute' kamp. De geschiedenis van het Amersfoortse interneringskamp Laan 1914 (1945-1946). Momenteel werkt hij voor AD Utrechts Nieuwsblad.

Tijdens de Bezetting hebben vele Nederlanders gecollaboreerd met de Duitsers. Zij werkten voor Duitse diensten of traden toe tot het Duitse leger. In totaal ging het om ongeveer 100.000 landgenoten die onvaderlandslievend gedrag lieten zien. Na de oorlog werden zij gearresteerd, geïnterneerd en berecht. De Regering koos voor berechting door Bijzondere Gerechtshoven, bestaande uit beroepsrechters en militaire raadsheren. Er werden nieuwe strafbare feiten ingevoerd en de straffen werden verzwaard. Michiel Severein heeft alle uitspraken en bijbehorende strafdossiers van de Kamer Leeuwarden van het Bijzondere Gerechtshof aldaar onderzocht. Hij concludeert dat het Hof ondanks\ de moeilijke omstandigheden de verdachten een eerlijk proces heeft bezorgd. Daarnaast is het Hof gevoelig gebleken voor de wens van de samenleving dat de collaborateurs streng gestraft moesten worden. Door extra zware straffen op te leggen heeft het Hof bijgedragen aan het wegnemen van de onlustgevoelens in de samenleving.

De Tweede Wereldoorlog verstoorde in menig opzicht de orde van het aan regels gebonden bestaan van Nederlandse mannelijke en vrouwelijke religieuzen. Desondanks is hun oorlogsbeleving en geschiedenis tot nu toe weinig gethematiseerd. Religieuzen zagen zichzelf geconfronteerd met een oorlogs- en bezettingssituatie die tot in hun kloosters en missieposten doordrong. Ze kregen te maken met bombardementen, confiscatie van eigendommen, inkwartiering van soldaten en tekorten aan levensmiddelen. Tegelijkertijd waren ze binnen én buiten de kloostermuren actief: ze gaven hulp aan oorlogsslachtoffers, droegen bij aan verschillende vormen van verzet, speelden al dan niet noodgedwongen een rol in interneringskampen en bezochten als legeraalmoezenier slagvelden. Door zowel de voor- als naoorlogse periode in de analyse te betrekken en aandacht te schenken aan ontwikkelingen binnen en buiten de Nederlandse landsgrenzen draagt deze bundel bij aan een genuanceerd en veelkleurig beeld van de geschiedenis van religieuzen en de Tweede Wereldoorlog.
