The study of capillarity is in the midst of a veritable explosion. What is offered here is not a comprehensive review of the latest research but rather a compendium of principles designed for the undergraduate student and for readers interested in the physics underlying these phenomena.

The theme of this book is an exposition of what we know about the physics underlying the onset of instability in liquid sheets and jets. Wave motion and breakup phenomena subsequent to the onset of instability are also carefully explained. Physical concepts are established through rigorous mathematics, accurate numerical analyses and comparison of theory with experiment.

In this dissertation, disturbance manipulation is used to control the breakup characteristics of liquids emanating as circular jets. A piezoelectric applies disturbances on the surface of the jet that grow and lead to separation of droplets from the liquid column. According to previous studies, breakup of a jet is strongly affected by characteristics of these initial disturbances. This dissertation introduces a regular breakup regime, which corresponds to the frequency range where the breakup is repeatable, though not necessarily uniform. Experimental studies are performed to specify the regular breakup regime for the jet at different conditions, and the results are compared and explained by theories as well. In most current practical applications, a very narrow frequency range is used for operation, since it is the only range where uniform droplets form. This work demonstrates that by eliminating undesired droplets, i.e. satellites, the entire regular breakup regime becomes available for desirable operation. Disturbance manipulation is introduced by adding another frequency component to the fundamental perturbation and applying a composite disturbance to the jet. This method provides droplets of the desired size when they cannot be produced with a single frequency disturbance alone. The results also demonstrate that different frequencies for the additional disturbance produce different patterns of droplet pinch-off. Hence, in order to manipulate the input disturbance, the characteristics of the actuator should be determined. Control system studies provide system identification to approximate the transfer function of the system using the experimental results. Experimental results contain the output vibrational data of the piezoelectric, measured by a Laser Doppler Vibrometer. The data is analyzed and utilized in system identification to determine the transfer function of the piezoelectric, which can further be used in open-loop and closed-loop controllers. Computational studies using Level Set Methods model the breakup according to the experimentally determined boundary values. The modeling results show similar jet profiles to those observed in experiments, as well as similar merging patterns. Finally, some preliminary studies on jet breakup of emulsified fluids and jets driven by collapsing bubbles help demonstrate the broad range of processes that involve liquid jet breakup.
