The Future of Nursing explores how nurses' roles, responsibilities, and education should change significantly to meet the increased demand for care that will be created by health care reform and to advance improvements in America's increasingly complex health system. At more than 3 million in number, nurses make up the single largest segment of the health care work force. They also spend the greatest amount of time in delivering patient care as a profession. Nurses therefore have valuable insights and unique abilities to contribute as partners with other health care professionals in improving the quality and safety of care as envisioned in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) enacted this year. Nurses should be fully engaged with other health professionals and assume leadership roles in redesigning care in the United States. To ensure its members are well-prepared, the profession should institute residency training for nurses, increase the percentage of nurses who attain a bachelor's degree to 80 percent by 2020, and double the number who pursue doctorates. Furthermore, regulatory and institutional obstacles-including limits on nurses' scope of practice-should be removed so that the health system can reap the full benefit of nurses' training, skills, and knowledge in patient care. In this book, the Institute of Medicine makes recommendations for an action-oriented blueprint for the future of nursing.

Long-term care (LTC) facilities have historically created an institutionalized environment for their residents which have been shown to decrease quality of life and decrease nursing job satisfaction within those facilities (Koren, 2010). This paper outlines a single implementation study of a person-centered care model in a long-term care facility. The goal of this implementation was to not only change the practice from a medical model to a person-centered care model but to positively impact nursing job satisfaction. This implementation took place at a long-term care facility in The State of Oregon. This study included an educational intervention, as well as practice change at the bedside and used pre and post job satisfaction surveys to measure nursing job satisfaction. The person-centered model of care was chosen because it was not only the model of care the nurses desired to implement but also gave nursing staff the foundation, knowledge and tools to move practice away from the traditional medical model of care thus improving resident quality of life and personal job satisfaction (Jones, 2011). The Population-Intervention-Comparison-Outcome model (PICO) used for this project was as follow: Population: Nursing staff in a long-term care setting, Intervention: Implementation of person-centered care model, Comparison: Current medical model of practice, Outcome: Improved job satisfaction among nursing staff. The sample size for this project was 17 nursing staff members both pre and post implementation. This study consisted of two phases over a 6-month time period. The results of this study showed a positive improvement in nursing job satisfaction over a six-month time period.

The purpose of this secondary data analysis study was to examine nurses' perceptions about inter-professional collaboration (IPC), job satisfaction and patient safety climate and the possible relationship between them in a large tertiary care hospital in Ontario, Canada. The data used for this study came from a large quasi-experimental study to evaluate the impact of introducing a new model of IPC. D'Amour's Interprofessional Collaboration, Hackman & Oldham's Global Job Satisfaction, and Sexton's Patient Safety Climate were the main instruments used in this study. Study results showed that nurses reported moderate levels of IPC (M= 3.56, SD= .65) as measured by two inter-professional subscales including: care coordination (M= 3.46, SD= .74) and sharing clinical activity (M= 3.63, SD= .66), moderate levels of job satisfaction (M= 3.28, SD= .97), and lastly, nurses reported moderately high perceptions of patient safety climate (M= 75.59, SD= 16.96). Beginning in 2000 the Institute of Medicine clearly established the importance of fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and teamwork with regard to improving patient care quality and safety in acute care hospitals. IOM documents also presented evidence of the positive impact that interdisciplinary collaboration and teamwork can have on other key dimensions of organizational performance. Interdisciplianry collaboration represents a significant issue confronting hospital and nursing executives, deans of colleges of nursing and medicine and practicing nurses and physicians. The aim of this study was to examine the extent to which collective self-esteem and attitudes toward collaboration were predictors to nurse-to-nurse, nurse-to-physician and physician-to-nurse collaborative practice behaviors in acute care hospitals. The conceptual framework used to guide the study was derived from social identity theory, symbolic interaction theory, and relevant published research on nurse-physician collaboration in contemporary acute care hospitals. Three instruments were mailed to randomly selected registered nurses and physicians in southwest Ohio. Bivariate and multi-variable regression relationships were determined.
