Crime Abuse And The Elderly written by Mike Brogden and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-01-11 with Social Science categories.

This book examines and analyses the experiences of older people as both victims and perpetrators of crime. Drawing upon a wealth of research from British and North American sources, the authors detail the historical experience of the elderly as victims, the extent of present-day criminal victimisation in the home and institutions, the social theories which attempt to explain that experience, and the types of resolution available. The book also addresses the experiences of elderly people in the criminal justice process - the offences to which they are prone, and the implications for penal policy of an increase in the elderly penal population. Crime, Abuse and the Elderly breaks new ground in its focus on the experiences of elderly people as criminal victims in private space, its insistence on a proper engagement of criminology with crimes involving older people, and in its argument that much so-called abuse can be explained criminologically and should be dealt with by the criminal justice system rather than by treatment and welfare agencies. It will be essential reading for students, academics and professionals concerned with the experiences of the elderly.

Studies on younger populations have shown that the effects of criminal victimization are detrimental to victims' emotional health. However, research on the effects of victimization on older adults is lacking. Guided by the stress paradigm, this study utilizes quantitative data from a larger longitudinal panel study of community-dwelling older adults to assess differences in psychological well-being between victims and non-victims as well as expected buffering effects of social support and religious coping. Additionally, a content analysis of qualitative data provides contextual data. Analyses indicate that single event stressors, such as a victimization do not affect psychological well-being nearly as much as cumulative and chronic life stressors. Self-reports of having been victim of a crime during the past year did not emerge as significant predictors of depressive symptoms, positive affect, or negative affect in regression analyses. Yet, t-test results illuminate statistically significant differences between victims and non-victims, with victims having a higher number of health conditions, higher number of other stressors, and higher negative affect. Demographic characteristics (e.g. age, income, marital status, gender, and living alone) were found to be significant predictors of psychological well-being outcomes. Findings support stress theory-based notions of the interconnectedness of demographic characteristics, cumulative and chronic stress, and psychological well-being (Pearlin, 1989). This research illustrates the need for further research on the psychological well-being of older victims, a population that is often overlooked in victimization research.

Crime and Victimization of the Elderly provides a "state-of-the-art" review of the social scientific literature relating to the crime problems of older persons. Building upon a broad interdisciplinary base, the volume addresses a wide range of issues that will prove to be of interest and value to criminology and gerontology students and to practicing professionals. The book is divided into two major sections. The first focuses upon elderly offenders and the second is devoted to a discussion of elderly victims. All of the major topics normally covered in the criminology and victimology courses are given detailed consideration. These include: the nature and types of crimes committed by the elderly, theories of elderly crime, criminal justice reactions to the older offender, patterns of elderly victimization, explanations of elderly victimization patterns, fear of crime among older persons and the abuse of the elderly in domestic settings. The chapters provide a critical assessment of the formative as well as the most recent empirical research conducted in the United States, Canada and elsewhere. Each chapter includes lists of suggested readings and each major section includes an extensive list of bibliographic references. This book is an invaluable resource to criminologists, gerontologists and social service professionals as it raises questions and defines issues vital to an understanding of the elderly and their association with various aspects of crime.

This book will help to advance understanding among policymakers, practitioners, and educators and prepare them to limit the negative consequences associated with victimization of older adults. This second edition builds on the earlier edition in five ways. First, new research has been added into each chapter. Second, the tables and figures have been updated, with applied critical thinking questions now included in order to make the tables and figures more interactive with readers. Third, various sections have been added in different chapters. Fourth, chapters 2-7 now include box inserts which include brief overviews written by professionals who are discussing some aspect of elder abuse. Finally, chapter 7 has been added. This new edition will help shed some light on what can be done to prevent elderly persons from being victimized, or at least minimize the consequences of victimization when abuse does occur. It will be of interest to those in several different disciplines, including criminology, gerontology, social work, social welfare, sociology, psychology, victimology, medicine and other social sciences.
