A preliminary study of the protein requirements of the Malaysian giant freshwater prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii De Man) was conducted by dispensing pelleted diets consiting of varying levels of protein (10.7, 23.2, 37.5, 45.6, 49.2, 50.9, 55.4, 57.2 and 59.9%) in the form of fishmeal incorporated with other feed ingredients. Protein deficient and rich diets demonstrated growth rates that were not promising. An optimum weight gain and food conversion was observed in a diet amended with 47.3% carbohydrate. The amended carbohydrate levels in the diet also had an important bearing on the composition of the diet because it was the prime energy source. It was dound that food conversion values correlated very well with the growth rates of the experimental animals but not with that of protein efficiency ratio. [Author's abstract].

Three experiments were conducted to compare the production of Macrobrachium rosenbergii under monoculture in flow-through tank and earthen pond systems. In the first experiment, juvenile prawns 0.083 g in weight wete stocked into nine flow-through tanks at the rates of 40 PL/m2, 60 PL/m2 and 80 PL/m2, respectively. In the second experiment, four 442 m2 ponds were stocked with prawns 0.049 g in weight for a period of five months at 10 PL/m2 stocking rate. In the third experimrnts, ten ponds ranging in size from 63 m2-442 m2 were stocked at the rate of 10 PL/m2, 20 Pl/m2 and 50 PL/m2 with prawns 0.033 g in weight. At the end of the 16-week study in experiment one, productions of 0.08 kg/m2, 0.09 kg/m2 and 0.15 kg/m2 for the respective stocking rates of 40, 60 and 80 PL/m2 were achieved for the flow-through tank culture system. The survival rates for the repective stocking densities were 78.1%, 62.9% and 77.2%.
