Ehrengard is a delightful fairy-tale set in the early nineteenth century in the grand Duchy of Babenhausen. The story revolves around the desire of the court portrait painter, Herr Cazotte, to seduce Ehrengard, maid-of-honour to Princess Ludmilla. The artist's ambition is to conquer the young maiden simply by causing her to blush 'not with indignation at an assault, but with ecstasy at a revelation... In this blush her past, present and future will be thrown at my feet'. To this end he resolves to paint a portrait of her as Venus bathing: to capture her on canvas for all eternity. But the beautiful maid from the mountains is not swift to surrender her virtue, as the artist discovers to his cost. 'Ehrengard' is the lightest, the most purely comic and pastoral story she ever wrote... it is unsurpassed by sheer loveliness... [it] brings all Isak Dinesen's work to a triumphant conclusion'--Robert Langbaum, author of Isak Dinesen's Art

From the author of the timeless classic Out of Africa: five hauntingly evoked, sensuously realized stories and a novella “that belong in that special realm in which artistry is more real than reality” (TIME). • Ehrengard is soon to be a Netflix Film. “Dinesen’s stories are the work of a writer with a powerful imagination and a shrewd intelligence.” —The New York Times Book Review In the classic “Babette’s Feast,” a mysterious Frenchwoman prepares sumptuous feast for a gathering of religious ascetics and, in doing so, introduces them to the true essence of grace. In “The Immortal Story,” a miserly old tea-trader living in Canton wishes for power and finds redemption as he turns an oft-told sailors’ tale into reality for a young man and woman. And in the magnificent novella Ehrengard, Dinesen tells of the powerful yet restrained rapport between a noble Wagnerian beauty and rakish artist.

Placing Kierkegaard squarely within the current of contemporary continental philosophy, The New Kierkegaard reveals intriguing insights into the philosopher's work and thinking. By reading Kierkegaard deconstructively, the 13 lively essays in this volume seek a deeper understanding of his work in philosophy, religion, and aesthetics. These readings explore the breadth of Kierkegaard's thought and unfold the richness of his views on the human condition. Consideration of a broad range of themes—from irony and madness to love and experience—and texts—Either/Or, Philosophical Fragments, Works of Love, and Fear and Trembling—emphasizes the ambiguities, dialectical tensions, and open-endedness of Kierkegaard's philosophical writings. These innovative and original commentaries give Kierkegaard a fresh look and bring him into present-day discussions and debates in continental philosophy. Contributors are Jacob Bøggild, John D. Caputo, Mark Dooley, Joakim Garff, Robert Gibbs, Elsebet Jegstrup, Richard Kearney, John Llewelyn, Roger Poole, Vanessa Rumble, John Vignaux Smyth, Jason Wirth, and David Wood.

This book investigates the writings of Karen Blixen (Isak Dinesen) from an existentialist angle. Although it has not been subject to much study, Blixen’s writing elegantly and subtly integrates the ideas of Kierkegaard, Nietzsche and Sartre in a way that makes the philosophers more accessible to a wider audience. However, Blixen also offers her own ideas of the fundamental problem in existentialism: how to arrive at an authentic identity through free, individual choices – or, as Nietzsche put it: how to become who you are. On the whole, Blixen’s authorship can be seen as an existential study of the 20th century and the ways by which Western culture came to be what it is now. In agreement with Nietzsche’s statement that all philosophy is an involuntary autobiography, this book also contains accounts of the lives of the three philosophers chiefly involved in this study.
