Weiterbildung und sein nie gestillter Lesehunger führen ihn an die neu gegründete Ruhr-Universität Bochum. Als Redakteur an mehreren Ruhrgebietszeitungen jagte er Serienkiller und weitere Mörder und wird Zeuge, wie Wirtschaft und Politik die Modernisierung des Ruhrgebiets hintertreiben. Am En-de taucht er in eine Science-Fiction-Welt der Erarbeitung wissenschaftlicher Beiträge durch Roboter ein, während sich Wissenschaftler um die Autorenzeile streiten. Eine Bilanz zu sieben Jahrzehnten Ruhrgebiet. Man fragt, wo der letzte Arbeiter geblieben ist. Als die rechte Hand des Ministerpräsidenten das gigantische Ruhrgebietsprogramm der Landesregierung auf Public-Relations- Maßnahmen und eine wissenschaftliche Begleitung nicht vorhandener Projekte zusammengestrichen hatte, herrschte an der Basis nach wie vor Furcht vor den Wissenschaftlern an den neuen Hochschulen. Der Ministerpräsident beruhigte sie. „An den Ergebnissen unseres politischen Handelns ändert sich nichts“, sagte er. „Nur im Procedere geht alles viel doller zu.“

I don’t speak it without mistakes, and I can only write it with the help of dictionaries, which I frequently consult. It is for this reason that I also call the French language an enemy language.
