Wo stand die Kunst nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs? Diese Frage wird in Deutschland wie in Frankreich häufig gestellt, doch für ihre Beantwortung selten eine bilaterale Perspektive gewählt. Dabei entfalteten die deutsch-französischen Kunstbeziehungen nach 1945 eine ungeheure Dynamik, die an die Zeit vor Diktatur und Krieg anknüpfte. Erstmals untersuchen Historiker und Kunsthistoriker beider Länder das bisher weitgehend unbekannte Kapitel der gemeinsamen Kunstgeschichte, rekonstruieren die Konkordanzen und Dissonanzen, die es damals in der Kunst und im ästhetischen Diskurs gab. An Watteaus Bild "Das Ladenschild des Kunsthändlers Gersaint" etwa, das einst Friedrich der Große erworben hatte und nun Aragon als "Blutgeld" zurückforderte, wird die politische, ja symbolische Bedeutung des Kulturtransfers deutlich. Beschränkte sich das Interesse der Franzosen zunächst auf die altdeutsche Kunst, entfaltete vice versa die französische Moderne große Wirkung - und zwar nicht nur im Westen, sondern auch im Osten, wo sich verschiedene Maler von der "offiziellen" Ästhetik des Sozialistischen Realismus abzugrenzen versuchten. Während man dort den Expressionismus und das Bauhaus entdeckte, reflektierten hier Künstler und Kritiker über den Kubismus und Existentialismus. Einige Maler und Bildhauer standen im Fokus der gegenseitigen Wahrnehmung. Galt Cézanne in Deutschland als Übervater der Moderne, wurde Klee in Frankreich als Wegbereiter der Abstraktion bewundert. Derweil man die Rückkehr Max Ernsts aus dem amerikanischen Exil auf beiden Seiten kaum registrierte, feierte die Pariser Avantgarde den deutschen Emigranten Wols. Der Band gibt nicht nur Einblick in die faszinierende Geschichte des deutsch-französischen Kulturtransfers, sondern führt mit neuen Fragen und Ergebnissen in die Nachkriegskunstgeschichte der zwei Kulturnationen ein.
