Les feux, nommés aujourd'hui "Feux de la Saint Jean", furent allumés dans l'antiquité par les Celtes à la première Lune de Mai au soir de Beltaine. La nature renaissait et livrait un dernier combat dans la timide remontée en plénitude du Soleil. Au 14ième siècle la peste sévissait. On alluma de nombreux feu pour l'éradiquer. La vieille tradition du 1er Mai fut alors reportée au soir du 23 Juin de la Saint Jean, patron des Chevaliers. Déchus le même siècle, c'est dans le secret de l'alchimie qu'ils poursuivirent leur combat Fêtés le Premier Mai, Jacques et Philippe patronnaient ces "travailleurs". Le premier par sa coquille ou sa merelle puisait l'eau utile à la purification de la pierre alchimique du second. Ainsi la Saint Jean représente l'apothéose d'une alchimie cosmique : la lutte du Printemps et de l'Hiver, du bien et du mal ou encore la délivrance d'une princesse face au Dragon. Le duc Jean 1er de Lorraine renoue au 14ième siècle avec la fête archaïque de Mai en faisant dévaler une roue en feu des coteaux de Contz vers la Moselle à Sierck(-les-Bains) au soir du solstice du solstice d'Été. A cette occasion le prince fit frapper une pièce d'or commémorative. L'Histoire ne dit pas s'il s'agissait de l'or des alchimistes... Partons à la redécouverte de la tradition celtico-johannite de la cité ducale de Lorraine de Sierck dans la Vallée de la Moselle jusqu'à Trèves.
