Diese Fülle ist kaum mehr zu überblicken. In der Debatte um den Postkolonialismus fällt auf, dass sie vor allem theoretischer Natur ist. Anstatt neue Erkenntnisse anzuwenden, wird eher die gesamte Geschichtswissenschaft in Frage gestellt. Überspitzt formuliert sind sowohl die aufklärerischen Gedanken als auch der europäische Universalitätsanspruch Ursache allen Übels auf der Welt. Dadurch kommt die Frage nach Schuldzuweisungen auf, sowohl bei den Autoren, als auch beim Leser. Dieser Eindruck entstand ebenfalls im Gespräch mit den Teilnehmern des absolvierten Seminars. Bei der notwendigen Auswahl und Eingrenzung der Literatur wurde der Schwerpunkt auf die im Seminar besprochene Artikel gelegt. Im 1. Kapitel werden die verwandten Arbeiten vorgestellt. Das zweite Kapitel zieht den Bezug zur Geschichtswissenschaft. Es wird untersucht inwieweit die post colonial studies Anwendung in der Forschung und im universitären Alltag finden. Anschließend werden die Erkenntnisse der Geschichtsdidaktik in die Diskussion eingebettet. Ziel der vorliegenden Arbeit soll die kritische Betrachtung der vorherrschenden Forschungsmeinung sowie deren Anwendung und auch Anwendbarkeit in der Geschichtswissenschaft sein.

Dementsprechend euphorisch fallen bisweilen die Hoffnungen aus, die in sie gesetzt werden. Solche neue Sendungsideologie kann nicht unwidersprochen bleiben. Mit Blick auf Edward Said und dessen These vom Orientalismus-Diskurs schreibt Jürgen Osterhammel: "Das Studium von Texten (...) rechtfertigt sich so allenfalls durch den Text um Text wiederholten Nachweis der Fehlrepräsentation, Zerrspiegelung und Entstellung außereuropäischer Kulturen (...). Erst in der "postkolonialen" Gegenwart, so glauben zahlreiche Vertreter, ist die Annäherung an die Wahrheit des 'Anderen' möglich geworden." Das Thema ist umstritten. Dieser Streit kann hier nicht geschlichtet werden. Der Ansatz ist ein viel pragmatischerer: Welche Anregungen, welche Elemente der postkolonialen Theoriediskussion können für die deutsche Geschichte fruchtbar gemacht werden? Passt das überhaupt, postkoloniale Ideen für ein kolonial doch vergleichsweise wenig bedeutsames Land? Zur Beantwortung dieser Fragen werden nach einer begrifflichen Klärung zunächst einige Ansätze der postkolonialen Debatte nachgezeichnet und Beispiele einer Anknüpfung an die deutsche Geschichte vorgestellt. Es zeigt sich dann, dass die - vom Postkolonialismus angeregte - Überwindung nationalstaatlich zentrierter Geschichtswissenschaft einige theoretische Überlegungen nötig gemacht hat und macht. Schließlich drängen sich aus den Schriften einiger postkolonialer Autoren fundamentale Fragen auf. Diese, keineswegs ganz neuen, epistemologischen Probleme einer Geschichtswissenschaft jenseits ihrer europäischen Wurzeln sollen zuletzt nur ausschnittartig beleuchtet werden.

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) – either as “standard” GIS or custom made Historical GIS (HGIS) – have become quite popular in some historical sub-disciplines, such as Economic and Social History or Historical Geography. “Mainstream” history, however, seems to be rather unaffected by this trend. More generally speaking: Why is it that computer applications in general have failed to make much headway in history departments, despite the first steps being undertaken a good forty years ago? With the “spatial turn” in full swing in the humanities, and many historians dealing with spatial and geographical questions, one would think GIS would be welcomed with open arms. Yet there seems to be no general anticipation by historians of employing GIS as a research tool. As mentioned, HGIS are popular chiefly among Historical Geographers and Social and Economic Historians. The latter disciplines seem to be predestined to use such software through the widespread quantitative methodology these disciplines have employed traditionally. Other historical sub-disciplines, such as Ancient History, are also very open to this emerging technology since the scarcity of written sources in this field can be mitigated by inferences made from an HGIS that has archaeological data stored in it, for example. In most of Modern History, however, the use of GIS is rarely seen. The intellectual benefit that a GIS may bring about seems not be apparent to scholars from this sub-discipline (and others). This book wants to investigate and discuss this controversy. Why does the wider historian community not embrace GIS more readily? While one cannot deny that the methodologies linked with a GIS follow geographical paradigms rather than historical ones, the potential of GIS as a 'killer application' for digital historical scholarship should be obvious. This book brings together authors from Geography and History to discuss the value of GIS for historical research. The focus, however, will not be on the "how", but on the "why" of GIS in history.

In this book some of the leading thinkers in development studies trace the history of their multi-disciplinary subject from the late colonial period and its establishment during decolonization all the way through to its contemporary concerns with poverty reduction. They present a critical genealogy of development by looking at the contested evolution and roles of development institutions and exploring changes in development discourses. These recollections, by those who teach, research and practise development, challenge simplistic, unilinear periodizations of the evolution of the discipline, and draw attention to those ongoing critiques of development studies, including Marxism, feminism and postcolonialism, which so often have been marginalized in mainstream development discourse. The contributors combine personal and institutional reflections, with an examination of key themes, including gender and development, NGOs, and natural resource management. Der Band zeigt die Möglichkeiten, aber auch die Grenzen des Umgangs mit der mittelalterlichen Populärkultur in Hochschule, Schule und Unterricht auf. Deutlich wird, dass die populäre Aufbereitung des Mittelalters ein geschichtswissenschaftliches und -didaktisches Potential birgt, das bisher weder angemessen analysiert noch erschlossen ist. Die moderne Mediävistik kann jedenfalls nicht umhin, sich mit den Geschichtsinszenierungen der Populärkultur intensiver zu befassen.
