Anschaulicher, konkreter, farbiger und detaillierter, aber auch spannender und frappanter ist eine Schulzeit unter dem Nationalsozialismus kaum jemals geschildert worden. Das Gleiche gilt von den in seinem Buch plastisch zu Tage tretenden Erfahrungen und Erinnerungen des Oberjungzugführers Mynarek an die Hitlerjugend. Eine Milieustudie über die HJ, die in ihrer Menge unbekannter Details wohl ziemlich einzigartig dasteht. Die Charaktere und Mentalitäten der Lehrer und Schüler in den Volksschulen und Oberschulen unter dem Hakenkreuz, ihre offiziellen und inoffiziellen Einstellungen und Meinungen, ihre Gruppenbildungen und ihre trotz der intensiv propagierten 'Volksgemeinschaft' sich herausbildenden Polaritäten sind eine Fundgrube für Chronisten und Historiografen des Dritten Reiches. Der Autor präsentiert Hunderte von Alltagsfacetten des Lebens unter den Nazis, Blitzlichter, die aufschlussreicher und informativer sind als ganze Reihen wissenschaftlicher Sachbücher. Mynarek schildert auch seinen Weg vom HJ-Führer zu einem der Wegbereiter der deutsch-polnischen Versöhnung, im Zusammenhang damit seine Kontakte zu bedeutenden Vertretern des polnischen Geisteslebens, Schriftstellern und Kirchenführern wie den Kardinälen Wyszyński und Kominek oder dem Leiter des oberschlesischen Priesterseminars, Dr. Jan Tomaszewski. Ein ganzes Kapitel unterschlagener bzw. unterdrückter deutsch-polnischer Geschichte unmittelbar nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg wird so in diesem Buch zu neuem Leben erweckt. Wer dieses Buch gelesen hat, erhält einen tiefen Einblick in deutsch-polnische Grenzmentalität, kann berechtigterweise mitreden, wenn es um das schwierige Werk des Brückenbaus zwischen den komplizierten Seelenlagen und unterschiedlichen Kulturinteressen von Deutschen und Polen geht. Mynareks autobiografischer Bericht ist nur ein Mosaikstein, aber ein wichtiger in der Erinnerungsliteratur jener zu Ende gehenden Generation, deren ganze Jugend noch in die Zeit des Dritten Reiches fiel.

Eighty-two percent of German boys and girls between the ages of ten and eighteen belonged to Hitlerjugend--Hitler Youth--or one of its affiliates by the time membership became fully compulsory in 1939. These adolescents were recognized by the SS, an exclusive cadre of Nazi zealots, as a source of future recruits to its own elite ranks, which were made up largely of men under the age of thirty. In this book, Gerhard Rempel examines the special relationship that developed between these two most youthful and dynamic branches of the National Socialist movement and concludes that the coalition gave nazism much of its passionate energy and contributed greatly to its initial political and military success. Rempel center his analysis of the HJ-SS relationship on two branches of the Hitler Youth. The first of these, the Patrol Service, was established as a juvenile police force to pursue ideological and social deviants, political opponents, and non-conformists within the HJ and among German youth at large. Under SS influence, however, membership in the organization became a preliminary apprenticeship for boys who would go on to be agents and soldiers in such SS-controlled units as the Gestapo and Death's Head Formations. The second, the Land Service, was created by HJ to encourage a return to farm living. But this battle to reverse "the flight from the land" took on military significance as the SS sought to use the Land Service to create "defense-peasants" who would provide a reliable food supply while defending the Fatherland. The transformation of the Patrol and Land services, like that of the HJ generally, served SS ends at the same time that it secured for the Nazi regime the practical and ideological support of Germany's youth. By fostering in the Hitler Youth as "national community" of the young, the SS believed it could convert the popular movement of nazism into a protomilitary program to produce ideologically pure and committed soldiers and leaders who would keep the movement young and vital.

On 14 January 1930, Horst Wessel, a young and ambitious member of the SA was shot at close range at his home in Berlin. Although the crime was never completely solved, the murder was most likely committed by a group of communists with close ties to the city's gangland. Wessel later died from his injuries. Joseph Goebbels, whose attention had already been drawn to Wessel as a possible future Nazi leader, was the first to recognize the propaganda potential of the case. 'A young martyr for the Third Reich' he wrote in his diary on 23 February 1930 immediately after receiving the news of Wessel's death. This was the beginning of the myth-making that transformed an ordinary individual into a masculine role model for an entire generation. Two months later, thousands of people lined the streets for Wessel's funeral parade and Goebbels delivered a graveside eulogy. In the years that followed - and as Nazi power increased - Horst Wessel became the hero of the Nazi movement - with his elaborate memorial quickly becoming a site of pilgrimage. The song Die Fahne Hoch for which Wessel had written the lyrics (and which subsequently became popularly known as the Horst Wessel Song) became the official Nazi party anthem and the Berlin district of Friedrichshain, where Wessel was murdered was renamed Horst-Wessel-Stadt in his honour. Numerous biographies and films followed. Using previously unseen material, Daniel Siemens provides a fascinating and gripping account of the background to Horst Wessel's murder and uncovers how and why the Nazis made him a political hero.
