Economic growth is highly dependent on technological progress and innovation, yet the sources from which these innovations originate are still largely misunderstood and untapped. Recent research has demonstrated that users, rather than manufacturers, are often a critical source of innovation in numerous fields from extreme sports to medical devices to software. This book systematically identifies the most important barriers to user-innovation and critically evaluates the democratization of innovation argument by critically assessing the main legal, economic, technological, and societal barriers to user-innovation for the first time and proposing alternative possibilities. Through original research the author reveals the dynamics of user-innovation and offers strategies for minimizing those factors that inhibit and stifle the spread of this phenomenon. From this analysis it becomes clear that user-innovation has become more difficult over time and that the problem is now of how manufacturers can enable users to overcome the discussed barriers and simultaneously benefit from such consumer-driven activities. Arguing that licenses are not just an important technology commercialization instrument but are tools critical to generating innovations, the author explains how licenses can in certain situations be employed to help users overcome some of the barriers to user-innovation. User-Innovation: Barriers to Democratization and IP Licensing is a practical guidebook as well as a startlingly original work of scholarship that will be essential reading for years to come.

In an era that has brought new and unexpected challenges for virtually every company, one would be hard-pressed to find any responsible manager who is not thinking about what the future will bring. In the wake of these challenges, strategic planning has moved from being the reserve of large corporations to becoming an essential need for even small and medium-sized enterprises. But what good is even the most convincing strategic concept if the company’s people are unwilling or unable to put it into practice? The key is to develop people, and to develop them not only for the work of today, but also for the challenges that the future holds. Strategic HR development has become a decisive force for the success of any business. This book, edited by Matthias T. Meifert, shows us which basic considerations we need to remember and what strategic HR development means in practice. Its interesting and vivid approach takes the reader on a tour of the eight stages of HR development, introduces the critical factors, and highlights many practical recommendations for strategic HR development practice in business.

Increasing attention has been paid in recent years to the marketing of services. This has been prompted by a recognition that services are an increasingly important sector of the economy and that they require a different approach to marketing. Consumers and Services approaches service marketing from a consumer perspective and draws together current understanding of service consumption from both an academic and practitioner point of view. This groundbreaking book is the first serious attempt to look at buyer behaviour in service sector industries and is suitable for graduate and advanced undergraduate students enrolled in consumer behaviour and service marketing courses. This unique book features a synthesis of current literature in the areas of consumer behaviour and services marketing a number of sectoral case studies which examine buyer behaviour in service industries, i.e., tourism, finance, charities, professional, health and retail internationally authored cases from US, Scandinavia, and Europe "This looks like an interesting book that will fit well into two increasingly popular subject areas." —Dr E.
