Viele der bekanntesten deutschen Romane behandeln Künstlerschicksale. Doch taucht der Begriff "Künstlerroman" in den literaturtheoretischen Debatten der letzten Jahrzehnte kaum auf. Seit Herbert Marcuses Dissertation (1922) wurde nicht versucht, den Begriff zu etablieren. Das erfolgreichere Bildungsromankonzept verlängert den subjektivistischen Blickwinkel der idealistischen Ästhetik. Demgegenüber eröffnet der Künstlerromanbegriff, wie der Verfasser dsieser Studie ihn konzipiert, eine Perspektive, in der sich die viel berufene "Pathogenese des modernen Subjekts" als Reflex eines grundsätzlichen Dilemmas abendländischen Denkens darstellt. Von diesem kündet der jahrhundertealte Konflikt zwischen Rhetorik und Philosophie, Nietzsches Kunstphilosophie bringt ihn auf die aktuellen Nenner und gegenwärtig zeitigt er die Verstörungen, die der dekonstruktivistische Reflexionsansatz hervorruft. Der Künstlerroman entwächst dem in Deutschland forcierter als andernorts betriebenen Versuch einer ästhetischen Subjektbegründung und dokumentiert sein Scheitern. Das Spektrum der analysierten Werke reicht von Heinses »Ardinghello« und den Hauptwerken klassisch-romantischer Literatur, über Rilkes »Malte« und Thomas Manns »Doktor Faustus« bis hin zu Bernhards »Untergeher« und Ransmayrs »Letzter Welt«. Diese Studie entwickelt auf poststrukturalistischer Basis eine "verkehrte" Sehweise. Auf der Ebene des Dargestellten verlagert sich das Interesse vom Subjekt des ästhetischen Bildungsprozesses auf das Medium dieses Prozesses: die als Bildungsinstrument betrachtete Kunstform. Auf der Darstellungsebene entspricht dem eine Akzentverschiebung vom geistigen auf den materiellen Sprachaspekt, von der Inhalts- auf die Ausdrucksebene, in der sich die traditionelle res-verba-Hierarchie zersetzt. Die behandelten Werke lesen sich in dieser Perspektive als Kryptogramme einer sophistischen Gegenbewegung gegen die idealistischen Hauptströmungen europäischer Kultur.

Crosses disciplinary boundaries to explore German Romantic writing about visual experience and the interplay of text and image in Romantic epistemology. The work of the groundbreaking writers and artists of German Romanticism -- including the writers Tieck, Brentano, and Eichendorff and the artists Caspar David Friedrich and Philipp Otto Runge -- followed from the philosophical arguments of the German Idealists, who placed emphasis on exploring the subjective space of the imagination. The Romantic perspective was a form of engagement with Idealist discourses, especially Kant's Critique of Pure Reason and Fichte's Science of Knowledge. Through an aggressive, speculative reading of Kant, the Romantics abandoned the binary distinction between the palpable outer world and the ungraspable space of the mind's eye and were therefore compelled to develop new terms for understanding the distinction between "internal" and "external." In this light, Brad Prager urges a reassessment of some of Romanticism's major oppositional tropes, contending that binaries such as "self and other," "symbol and allegory," and "light and dark," should be understood as alternatives to Lessing's distinction between interior and exterior worlds. Prager thus crosses the boundaries between philosophy, literature, and art history to explore German Romantic writing about visual experience, examining the interplay of text and image in the formulation of Romantic epistemology. This study examines how selected authors of the late 20th and early 21st centuries write about their creative processes in old age and thus purposefully produce a late style of their own. Late-life creativity has not always been viewed favourably. Prevalent "peak-and-decline" models suggest that artists, as they grow old, cease to produce highquality work. Aiming to counter such ageist discourses, the present study proposes a new ethics of reading literary texts by elderly authors. For this purpose, it develops a methodology that consolidates textual analysis with cultural gerontology.
