Aparte la mala memoria colectiva, defecto incurable de nuestra idiosincrasia, tal vez cuente el que hicimos hace ochenta años de historia ejemplar en América y acabamos por acostumbrarnos. Nuestros grandes episodios, nuestros diamantes militares y cívicos han llegado a parecernos tan naturales como si hubiesen sido sucesos cotidianos. A veces pienso en la veneración profunda y exaltada que en Argentina profesan a sus prohombres, entre ellos el señor Sarmiento, personaje que jamás podría compararse con Vicuña Mackenna como escritor y tribuno ni con Barros Arana como historiador y educador. ¡A qué altura no habrían encumbrado a estos dos compatriotas de haber nacido allende la Cordillera! De igual modo, un Portales argentino o brasileño sería considerado un superhombre, y qué decir de un Montt, un Prat o un Balmaceda. Otros pueblos agigantan a sus próceres; el nuestro tiende a reducir a los suyos con ligereza inconcebible, o a olvidarlos, como si le incomodasen. Concretándonos a los fastos bélicos, vemos que a ninguna nación americana han respondido mejor su Marina y su Ejército cuando la patria estaba en peligro. Tradición rectilínea en un pueblo no militarista y que invariablemente se batió en condiciones de inferioridad numérica y económica. Hasta sus derrotas son electrizantes y decisivas: Rancagua, Tarapacá, Iquique, La Concepción. Y algunas de las victorias pertenecen a la categoría de las llamadas imposibles, como la toma de los castillos de Valdivia y la captura de la Esmeralda, el ataque a Panamá por la Rosa de los Andes y la travesía del Istmo hasta el Atlántico con uno de sus botes llevado en hombros; la captura del Aquiles en la isla Guam, Micronesia, y la triple captura en el Callao, sin gasto de pólvora, ejecutadas por Ángulo; el combate del Pan de Azúcar de Yungay, la destrucción de un blindado por una goleta de madera en Punta Gruesa, el desembarco en Pisagua, la batalla en el arenal de Tacna y la toma del Morro de Arica.

The Beagle conflict was a territorial dispute between Argentina and Chile over the determination of the layout of the eastern mouth of the Beagle Channel, which affected the sovereignty of the islands located south of the channel, and east of Cape Horn and its adjacent maritime spaces. The first antecedents of the conflict date back to 1888, seven years after the signing of the Treaty of Limits. In 1901, the first Argentine map appeared in which some of the islands in question were drawn as within Argentinas control. Despite the small size of the islands, their strategic value between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans caused a long conflict between the two South American states that went on for much of the 20th century, causing a number of minor incidents, and almost culminating in a major war. The conflict focused on the dispute over the sovereignty of the islands and the oceanic rights generated by them to Chile, but it was not limited exclusively to these islands. Volume 1 of The Beagle Conflict mini-series covers the origins of the dispute and border clashes between the two countries from the time of the independence of Chile and Argentina from the Spanish Crown, until early 1978, and is illustrated with original photographs, custom-drawn artworks and maps.
