This is an open access book. The COVID-19 pandemic in the last two years has influenced how educational system works. Online learning became the primal policy taken by all institutions in the world to lower the risk of the virus spread. Despite the drawbacks of the online learning, teachers and students were accustomed with the distant learning through web meetings, Learning Management Systems (LMS) and other online learning platforms. In that time, topics under digital learning and education 5.0 were the main stakes in academic disseminations. Buku ini sebenarnya kumpulan tulisan yang sudah penulis susun beberapa tahun lalu. Buku ini diterbitkan menanggapi beberapa pertanyaan mahasiswa terkait sulitnya mencari buku rujukan khususnya terkait makna, fungsi, dan peranan karya sastra yang lengkap dan dalam bahasa Indonesia. Buku tentang pengenalan karya sastra yang membicarakan sastra Indonesia juga sastra dunia (khususnya sastra Inggris dan sastra Amerika) memang masih tergolong langka. Buku-buku terkait sastra umumnya adalah kumpulan teori atau hasil penelitian yang cenderung sulit dipahami oleh mahasiswa semester awal. Di samping itu, buku-buku terkait pengantar sastra umumnya berbahasa Inggris atau buku terjemahan. Buku pengantar karya sastra yang telah ada jarang membahas isu-isu kontekstual terkait karya sastra dan agama (khususnya Islam), karya sastra dan kekuasaan, karya sastra dan mitos, dan isu-isu kontekstual lainya. Dalam mengajar sehari-hari, penulis menemukan masih banyak mahasiswa yang kebingungan membedakan pengertian sastra dan manfaat mempelajari atau membaca karya sastra. Itu sebabnya, buku ini membahas secara lengkap berbagai persoalan yang berkembang khususnya terkait hubungan antara karya sastra dan masyarakat serta karya sastra dan ideologi atau agama, juga persoalan pengajaran dan resepsi karya sastra di Indonesia. Bagian yang lebih menarik lagi dari buku ini adalah contoh yang diberikan bukan hanya karya sastra dalam Bahasa Indonesia, tetapi juga contoh karya sastra dari berbagai belahan dunia, khususnya Amerika dan Inggris. Most books on film adaptation—the relation between films and their literary sources—focus on a series of close one-to-one comparisons between specific films and canonical novels. This volume identifies and investigates a far wider array of problems posed by the process of adaptation. Beginning with an examination of why adaptation study has so often supported the institution of literature rather than fostering the practice of literacy, Thomas Leitch considers how the creators of short silent films attempted to give them the weight of literature, what sorts of fidelity are possible in an adaptation of sacred scripture, what it means for an adaptation to pose as an introduction to, rather than a transcription of, a literary classic, and why and how some films have sought impossibly close fidelity to their sources. After examining the surprisingly divergent fidelity claims made by three different kinds of canonical adaptations, Leitch's analysis moves beyond literary sources to consider why a small number of adapters have risen to the status of auteurs and how illustrated books, comic strips, video games, and true stories have been adapted to the screen. The range of films studied, from silent Shakespeare to Sherlock Holmes to The Lord of the Rings, is as broad as the problems that come under review.

In the early 20th century, the Dutch East Indies was a colony in flux. Greater access to education meant an increasingly literate financial elite and, thus, a burgeoning literary industry. The lower class, meanwhile, found its entertainment in stage performances—oral literature often loosely adapted from famous novels. The film industry itself was attempting to find a successful formula, and in its early years faced heavy competition from the theatre. Educated women called for women’s rights and protection of women’s welfare as the economy began to transform from one based on the production of raw goods to one based in manufacturing. In this turbulent background, the social act of adapting films from novels emerged. This phenomenon began in 1927 with the adaptation of Eulis Atjih by G. Krugers and ended in 1942—before the Japanese occupation—with the adaptation of Siti Noerbaja by Lie Tek Swie. A total of eleven films were adapted from eight novels in the Indies. Only one author had multiple works adapted, and two novels were adapted more than once. The nine producers and directors involved in adapting novels came from a variety of ethnicities. The works adapted, meanwhile, were generally popular in wide society—though often best known through stage performances and adaptations. The adaptation process from this period has been little understood, yet important for understanding the history of screen adaptations, which are quickly becoming the most lucrative type of film in Indonesia.
