Entre los textos aquí reunidos destaca El alienista; en él se nos relata la vuelta a su ciudad natal del doctor Simón Bocamarte, quien en su afán por estudiar la locura construye su propio manicomio, al que llama Casa Verde. Sus investigaciones le llevan a pensar que allí donde falta la razón tiene que estar la locura; su empeño por analizar a todo aquel que no razone según un criterio científico acaba siendo internado para su estudio psicológico, provocando que gran parte de la población acabe internada, lo que incitará la indignación del pueblo, que liderados por un barbero amenaza con provocar una revolución. A partir de este punto el cuento entra en una sucesión de idas y venidas entre el poder, la locura y la razón en un universo tan machadiano que el lector no podrá dejar de asombrarse de la capacidad irónica y el humor del autor para retratar al ser humano. El resto de los escritos siguen esta lógica donde los personajes se enfrentan a las contradicciones propias de un mundo sin lógica y cuyo orden es cuestionado constantemente por la naturaleza desordenada, donde una pieza encaja en la siguiente pero descoloca la posterior, y cada decisión o falta de la misma provoca un infinito caos. Escrito en un período de constantes revoluciones, levantamientos y estudios científicos de la psique humana, Machado de Assis despliega en estas páginas todos los recursos literarios necesarios para poder describir un mundo corrupto, lleno de necedades, cuyo último fin es al menos poder entretenernos.

The story that unfolds in Memorias del Sanatorio has its beginnings in the mental vortex that engulfs Arnaldo Morales after the suicide of his father. There is no possible resurrection after that fact,and our main character is hospitalized in a quirky mental sanatorioum in Spain, where the sons and daughters of well to do in Latin American families, as well as of the Spanish bourgeois, are hospitalized with the hope of some miraculous cure of their mental illness from which they will continue to suffer in the clinic, year after year, in the hallways and the rooms of the Esquerdo The characters that inhabit these halls of the asylum are markedly interesting in their contorted psychologies, in their delusional systems, in the inventions of the imaginations that lead them somewhere that they do not remotely expect: the end of their shadows past the gray walls, the corridors they follow going nowhere through the center of the despair of their schizophrenias: the end of their delusions that do not provide with a way out. The writer has gotten his material for the novel from his own experience as he walked these corridors, and the streets that appear in the narrative; and of course from the experience of mental illness. One more important aspect of the narrative: The narrator find himself in the streets of Miami Beach throughout the novel, from where he recollects the thirty years past when the remembrances from the sanatorium took place. The world is going to end, like it happens in the end of every millennium, and a new imperator comes to MB to witnesses the executions of the insane.

El cuento El alienista (1881) escrita por Machado de Assis, se sitúa en la pequeña ciudad de Itaguaí de un Brasil colonial durante el largo reino del último emperador brasileño Dom Pedro II y los comienzos de la república. La ficción narra la llegada al pueblo del eminente doctor Simón Bacamarte después de brillantes estudios europeos, lejos de una cierta realidad local. El doctor introduce en Itaguaí la idea de crear una casa de orates, no tanto con el fin de sanar los locos si no de estudiar la locura y clasificar los diferentes casos para llegar a la causa del fenómeno y al remedio universal.
