First published in Spain in the summer of 1929, Concerning the Angels (Sobre los angeles) is the great Spanish poet Rafael Alberti's masterpiece, on a par with T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land, Pablo Neruda's Residencia en la tierra, and Federico Garcia Lorca's Poeta en Nueva York. It marks a major departure from the light-hearted tone of the poet's earlier verse, which was notably influence by Andalusian folksong. This bilingual text is at once intensely imaginative and intimately realistic, a lyrical illumination of the poet's "dark night of the soul." Rafael Alberti, born in 1902, is the last surviving member of the so-called Generation of 1927 that included such notable Spanish poets Federico Garcia Lorca, Vincente Alexandre, Pedro Salinas, Jorge Guillen, and Luis Cernuda. Christopher Sawyer-Laucanno lives in Massachusetts and teaches in the program in Writing and Humanistic Studies at MIT.

El alma en pena recoge poemas escritos por Fernández Shaw que giran alrededor de sentimientos de aflicción y desasosiego, a propósito de la muerte de seres queridos, de un desamor o sin causa evidente. A veces una sierra cubierta de neblina hace juego con esos sentimientos, pero también –cosa atípica dentro su obra– en otras ocasiones se hace patente un desacople entre el esplendor de la naturaleza en primavera, por ejemplo, y el ánimo que persiste sombrío. Aquí el autor abreva en algo que muchas y muchos poetas han notado a través de los tiempos: que la tristeza les ofrece un lente especial para mirar el mundo. Carlos Fernández Shaw (Cádiz, 1865 - El Pardo, 1911) fue un prolífico dramaturgo, periodista y poeta español. Identificado en retrospectiva como pre-modernista, ocupó un lugar prominente en el Ateneo de Madrid. Escribió en distintos medios de prensa gráfica, especialmente para el diario La época. Como dramaturgo, hizo el libreto de La vida breve en la puesta teatral musicalizada por Manuel de Falla y co-escribió La revoltosa junto a José López Silva, entre muchos otros logros. Sus obras en verso más conocidas seguramente sean Poesías de la sierra y Poesías del mar. Sus cuentos fueron recopilados de manera póstuma en La pícara Olalla.
