La importancia de Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968) se ha venido acrecentando progresivamente desde los años cincuenta hasta nuestros días, a medida que numerosos movimientos artísticos le reconocían como padre fundador. Pero aunque la magnitud de su influencia sólo es hoy comparable a la de Picasso, Duchamp sigue siendo un desconocido fuera del escaso círculo de unos pocos iniciados. Pero la revisión de ciertos tópicos permite descubrir algo mucho más rico y estimulante. Duchamp estuvo siempre en el centro de los grandes debates del mundo contemporáneo, y aunque evolucionó al vincularse a diversos ismos de la vanguardia, mantuvo constantemente el sello de una personalidad inconfundible. Sus dos grandes preocupaciones conciernen a la naturaleza del conocimiento (de la «verdad científica») y al sentido del amor con su límite natural, la muerte. Los trabajos de Duchamp hablan siempre de erotismo, y lo hacen tocando los límites, en unos términos que comprometen lo socialmente aceptable. Este libro trata con amplitud estos y otros asuntos. Un gran esfuerzo de contextualización cultural y de exégesis filológica ha permitido a su autor revisar cuestiones de gran importancia, como el significado de los ready-mades o el de la gran instalación secreta conocida como Étant donnés. Por primera vez se propone una cuidadosa lectura por etapas del Gran vidrio, rastreando la evolución de cada elemento, desde las ideas preliminares hasta su desaparición o integración en el programa final de la obra.
