El Arcano de la Quina' es una obra referente de la ciencia de finales del siglo XVIII escrita por José Celestino Mutis que fue un famoso botánico y médico que viajó al virreinato de Nueva Granada, que correspondería con la actual Colombia, para observar, describir, descubrir, analizar y comentar la corteza del quino, esto es, la quina, a la cual se le atribuían efectos medicinales. 0Sin embargo, Juan Manuel Pedroviejo Esteruelas analiza El Arcano de la Quina como un texto argumentativo porque José Celestino Mutis defiende sus ideas, refuta las de otros y utiliza unas técnicas propias de la argumentación. Pero antes de llegar a esta conclusión hay que tener en cuenta que está inserto en una tradición discursiva que, como tal, está sometida a cambio mediante procesos de reducción, adición e interferencia textual. De hecho, en El Arcano de la Quina conviven tres tipos de estilos: el científico, el periodístico y el ensayo. 0Por otro lado, de las múltiples teorías de la argumentación tenidas en cuenta, hay dos fundamentales para su trabajo de investigación: la gramática argumental de Lo Cascio (1998), de donde toma la idea formular reglas generales que organicen los componentes de la argumentación, y la teoría de la argumentación de Anscombre y Ducrot (1994 [1983]) de donde recoge la idea de que son las unidades lingüísticas empleadas por los interlocutores y no los hechos las que gobiernan y regulan la orientación argumentativa de un segmento discursivo. 0Para finalizar y después del análisis cuantitativo y cualitativo de todos los recursos argumentativos, el autor formula 10 leyes o máximas de relación entre las estructuras de las secuencias y las herramientas argumentativas empleadas por Mutis en su Arcano de la Quina que son el colofón de su trabajo de investigación.
