El arenal de Sevilla es una comedia de capa y espada de Lope de Vega (1562-1635), que pertenece al grupo de obras ambientadas en Sevilla, como El ruiseñor de Sevilla, La
Estrella de Sevilla, La corona merecida, La prisión sin culpa, El amante agradecido o La más prudente venganza, entre otras. De entre todos los títulos citados, el que mejor retrata y plasma la realidad de la capital hispalense en estos años dorados del momento de su máximo esplendor es, sin duda alguna, El Arenal de Sevilla. Escrita por Lope de Vega en los primeros meses de 1603 durante una de sus etapas de residencia en la ciudad andaluza, la comedia en tres actos fue publicada en Madrid en 1618. Ambientada toda su acción en Sevilla en el mismo año en que se gestaron sus versos, la historia de amor que se narra es muy simple: Don Lope, el protagonista, ha abandonado a Lucinda y quiere embarcarse para las Indias. En el Arenal de Sevilla se encuentra con otra mujer, Laura, de la que se enamora. Pero llega Lucinda a Sevilla vestida de gitana e interviene con mentiras y falsos rumores para intentar romper ese nuevo amor de don Lope, que decide finalmente dejar a Lucinda para casarse con Laura. El argumento en sí viene a ser como un pretexto literario para describir el Arenal y su bullicioso y cosmopolita ambiente, de forma tal que este ribereño y sevillano espacio es el que se convierte realmente en el auténtico protagonista de la obra.
