Como se ha escrito la histira del arte en México? Es una de las preguntas que intenta contestar este conjunto de ensayos que parte del análisis de las ideas de quienes han articulado formas de acercarse al objeto artístico. Una de las preocupaciones principales ha sido la de revisar lo que bien puede llarmarse la historiografía del arte de corte nacionalista y tendencia historicista. Dos problemas herdamos de ella: uno el la visión de la historia del arte como brazo de la historia y el otro es la sustitución de lo nacional en detrimento de una concepción de la modernidad estética. La validez de la modernidad estriba en funcionar como uno corriente crítica y situar en el mundo el arte mexicano.
