Nunca sabe quién fue, pero ese beso lo llenó de grandes ilusiones. . El personaje después de una larga ausencia retorna al lugar donde les habían dado la recepción."Cuando regresó a su isba, no encontró en ella a ninguno de sus compañeros. El ordenanza le informó que todos se habían ido a casa del «general Fontriabkin», que había mandado un jinete a invitarlos... Por un instante el gozo estalló en el pecho de Riabóvich, pero él se apresuró a apagar aquella llama, se acostó y, para contrariar a su destino, como si deseara vejarle, no fue a casa del general". El cuento termina de una manera extraordinaria como corresponde a uno de los grandes cuentistas.
