George Dickie ha sido un referente obligado en el mundo de la cultura desde que en 1969 publicó su artículo “Defining Art”, en el que consideraba el arte como una actividad que sólo podía entenderse en el marco de prácticas institucionales. A su nombre se asocia la “teoría institucional”, que sitúa la clasificación de los objetos como obras artísticas en el conjunto de prácticas institucionales y sociales de lo que él llama el mundo del arte, más que en rasgos ontológicos o en elementos de la experiencia humana. Una obra es obra de arte a causa de su posición en un contexto institucional. En El círculo del arte, Dickie revisa las anteriores versiones de la teoría institucional, saliendo al paso de las críticas que se han hecho a las mismas, y expone una teoría clasificatoria que no trata de explicar por qué asignamos valor a determinadas obras de arte, sino que se limita a enunciar las propiedades suficientes para su caracterización: la artefactualidad y la posibilidad de presentación a un público perteneciente a ese medio, así como los roles de cada una de las personas que forman parte de ese mundo. La teoría institucional, pues, marca una aguda ruptura con la teorización tradicional del arte.

"The first exhibition to offer a critical assessment of the artistic experimentation that took place in Mexico during the last three decades of the twentieth century. This is the first book in English ever to consider the theatre of all the Spanish American countries. Even in Spanish, the pioneer study that covers the whole field was also written by Jones. Pre-Columbian Indians, conquistadores, missionary priests, viceroys, dictators, and national heroes form a background of true drama for the main characters here—those who wrote and produced and acted in the make-believe drama of the times.
