«Una sesgada visión del XIX español tiende a entender esta historia como un enfrentamiento entre liberales, modernizadores, y católicos, reaccionarios. Esta visión es falsa: desde el catolicismo militante, explícito y convencido de los autores de la Constitución de Cádiz, hasta, por ejemplo, Canalejas, la inmensa mayoría de políticos liberales fueron católicos, no se escondían de ello y no encontraron ninguna razón teológica que les hiciera pensar en una contradicción entre su fe y una sociedad liberal.
