Cautiverio feliz, publicado en 1673 por el maestro de campo Francisco Núñez de Pineda y Bascuñán, relata su vida en manos de los mapuche tras ser capturado en la batalla de Las Cangrejeras en 1629. Los manuscritos originales son un fiel retrato de la Guerra de Arauco y de las conflictivas relaciones hispano-mapuche de aquel período colonial. Aunque su autor era un oficial de los ejércitos reales, destaca el alto grado de cultura de los mapuche, la humanidad con que trataban a sus cautivos y lo justo de su férrea resistencia a la invasión de su territorio.
