Se han propuesto un sinnúmero de estándares dirigidos a delimitar el alcance del concepto del laudo, lo que ha dado lugar a un conjunto de posiciones contrapuestas, que parecen no llegar a un punto de encuentro. Sin embargo, este trabajo no pretende hallar verdades ni sumar nuevas teorías a las existentes. Por el contrario, busca explicar de la manera más sistemática posible los estándares en conflicto, brindando al lector una herramienta útil para entenderlos y hacer un uso adecuado de ellos. El punto de partida es la identificación de los dos núcleos de las discusiones que rodean al concepto del laudo arbitral, a saber: la finalidad del laudo y el origen territorial del laudo.
