Excerpt from El Continente Americano, Vol. 3: Conferencias Dadas en el Ateneo Científico, Literario y Artístico de Madrid, Con Motivo del Cuarto Centenario del Descubrimiento de Améríca Situada toda la América entre los grandes Océanos, Atlán tico y Pacífico, presenta en sus costas notabilísimas penínsulas, golfos, cabos, ensenadas, freos, deltas, riberas y bahías, de que sólo hablaremos para hacer constar un hecho geológico, cual es: que en las costas del continente americano han ocurrido variaciones notables desde la época de su descubrimiento por los españoles, pues está fuera de duda que se hunden las del este de los Estados Unidos, mientras se alzan las del Golfo de Méjico, y al paso que se abisman las del Brasil, se elevan las de Chile y Perú en una extensión de más de 4000 quilómetros, y si la California del S. Parece deprimirse, en la del N., y todo el resto de la costa hasta el Océano glacial, se nota el levanta miento contrapuesto. No se crea que estos fenómenos, de ba lance son de poca monta, pues hay parajes, al norte de la Concepción, y cerca de Valparaíso, en que el cambio de nivel llega a un metro por año, y las líneas de las costas antiguas se observan, en ciertos puntos, a 400 metros sobre el actual plano del mar.
