Bemelmans escribió también novelas como El Danubio azul (1945), Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep (1943) o The Street Where the Heart Lies (1963), textos humorísticos como Life Class (1938) y Hotel Splendide (1941), y libros de viajes como The Donkey Inside (1941), The Best of Times: An Account of Europe Revisited (1948) o Italian Holiday (1961).

In the 1930s, Américo Paredes, the renowned folklorist, wrote a novel set to the background of the struggles of Texas Mexicans to preserve their property, culture and identity in the face of Anglo-American migration to and growing dominance over the Rio Grande Valley. Episodes of guerilla warfare, land grabs, racism, jingoism, and abuses by the Texas Rangers make this an adventure novel as well as one of reflection on the making of modern day Texas. George Washington GÑmez is a true precursor of the modern Chicano novel.

What drove me to write my story originally, was to leave for my children and grandchildren so that they may know me and their roots. Everyone has a story to tell, but this is our story. The why we are here, the struggles we have gone through, the adventures, the comedy, the tragedies and how we have faired in the end. The making of new Americans. But in the process, I realized how many learning experiences I had to go through. How difficult the school of hard knocks is. If I can help my children and grandchildren avoid making the same mistakes I made, maybe I can help others as well. I am sure there is a little bit for everyone to enjoy. I went from not speaking English to mastering it. I went from an angry young child to an adult still working on it. From pride to forgiveness. And from redemption to atonement. No one is all good, just like no one is all bad. No one is always right, just like no one is always wrong. The different stages in our lives takes us through different roads, paths and alleys. We go through a preview of whats out there waiting for us. Like Dantes Inferno, where Virgil walks him through all the different hells and heavens. We make good choices some times. Other times, we make wrong choices. In the end, hopefully it balances out.

Fully revised and updated, the sixth edition is even more relevant to students and teachers of Spanish. The sixth edition includes: • new chapters, providing more detail and examples of key areas of Spanish grammar; • an increased number of Mexican examples to reflect the growing interest in this country’s variety of Spanish; • new information for readers studying Spanish and French together; • a glossary of grammatical terms including English translations of Spanish terms.
