"Tal como lo indica el autor en la introducción de su libro, éste busca presentar a sus estudiantes de la Universidad de Georgetown ciertos conceptos esenciales del Derecho Natural Tradicional. Su motivación final para escribir este libro ha sido la necesidad de clarificar una disciplina fundamental para el entendimiento del derecho en la Cultura Occidental, el que, por diversas razones, se ha visto oscurecido, distorsionado, y tergiversado a través de los tiempos. El autor critica las diversas ideologías así denominadas “de los derechos naturales” que a través de las eras han intentado suplantar la Doctrina del Derecho Natural Tradicional, la que constituye un edificio intelectual que es, en opinión del autor, fundamentalmente católico. Al plantear su exposición, el autor no duda en presentar su crítica a connotados autores como Rousseau, Voltaire, Bentham, Locke, entre otros, pero también rescatando la visión de otros destacados autores occidentales como De Tocqueville, y Rosmini-Serbati. La obra no está, por lo tanto, dirigida tanto a expertos, sino a nueva generación de estudiantes del derecho que, por diversas razones, se han visto privados de recibir una genuina exposición de los aspectos esenciales del Derecho Natural Tradicional. Finalmente, el autor agradece al abogado español Ángel Alonso por su excelente y generoso trabajo en la traducción del presente libro de su original en inglés al castellano".

"Solo el contraste entre Derecho natural y Derecho positivo permite entender la esencia tanto del uno como del otro. También el Derecho positivo es una ordenación de la conducta humana; pero se distingue del “natural” en que es solo “artificial”, esto es, creado por el hombre, y en cuanto tal aparece como simple obra humana. En tanto que procede de la insuficiente voluntad humana se presenta siempre, respecto del “natural”, como más o menos “arbitrario”. Y por eso, en contraste con aquél, no es necesariamente justo, sino también injusto en alguna medida. En la ordenación “natural” encuentra la ordenación “artificial” positiva la medida de su valor o desvalor. Según el grado de su coincidencia o contradicción con el Derecho natural, el Derecho positivo es contemplado desde el punto de vista del Derecho natural un derecho bueno o malo, justo o injusto".
