La televisión se ha convertido en el medio de comunicación que más influye en las campañas electorales. A través de ella, los partidos políticos desarrollan sus estrategias persuasivas. Este libro toma como objeto de estudio la comunicación persuasiva audiovisual explícita y establece un método para su análisis. Para elaborar este método de análisis se parte de la teoría de la argumentación propuesta por Chaïm Perelman, puntal básico de los estudios retóricos en el siglo XX. Esta teoría aporta indudables avances en el estudio de la comunicación persuasiva, pero su aplicación al análisis del discurso televisivo comporta limitaciones. Tal como se presenta aquí, las limitaciones pueden superarse si se enmarca la teoría perelmaniana en la estructura de las partes retóricas (intelectio, inventio, dispositio, elocutio, memoria y actio) que proporciona la retórica clásica. Así, se propone un análisis estructural del discurso que va desde los niveles más superficiales del texto hasta los más profundos. A modo de ejemplo, se aplica este método al análisis de la campaña electoral de marzo del 2000.

La voluntad de orientar la acción y el pensamiento nunca está del todo ausente en los discursos que tienen que ver con io humano. Por ello, los usos y lecturas que se hacen de los textos siempre han ocupado un lugar notable entre las prácticas subjetivas de que disponen los individuos para labrarse un modo de ser. La historia de la cultura ha sido pródiga en discursos de diversa condición que han hecho las veces de guía, precepto o instrucción para quienes han asumido la verdad expresa en ellos como propia. Sin embargo, sólo en las últimas décadas hemos visto emerger, y establecerse en producción masiva, un género de textos expresamente concebidos como utensilio diagnóstico y terapéutico al efecto de afrontar la vida cotidiana y procurar la resistencia que exigen las peripecias vitales. Este género, que responde a la denominación genérica de autoayuda, dispone toda suerte de estrategias para encarar nuevas versiones del sufrimiento humano que esos mismos textos contribuyen a definir. Un someto repaso a la variedad de padecimientos que quieren enseñarnos a curar en nosotros mismos, a las defìciencias que en ellos se nos urge a superar, y a los objetivos que señalan como ideales por realizar, nos muestra cuán compleja y laboriosa se presenta en nuestro tiempo la empresa de vivir, e induce a preguntarse por las fuentes de estos modos de problematizar la existencia al mismo tiempo que por las claves de la acogida que a esos discursos se les dispensa. Este trabajo responde al interés de trazar una perspectiva para el análisis del fenómeno de la autoayuda y de elaborar un marco teórico productivo en que interpretarlo y valorarlo críticamente. Para ello se establecen dos coordenadas fundamentales que orientan el análisis. Por una parte, se examina el discurso de autoayuda a la luz del concepto foucaultiano de "tecnología del yo", que permite contarlo entre las prácticas por medio de las cuales los individuos han buscado históricamente operar transformaciones en sí mismos en pos de algún fin. Por otra parte se analizan la emergencía y el sentido del discurso de autoayuda por referencia a la hegemonía que los discursos de las ciencias psicológicas han alcanzado en las sociedades contemporáneas en contacto con nuevas articulaciones del poder político. Ambas coordenadas confuyen en un modo de analizar la subjetividad que Foucault propuso como orientado por los ejes del conocimiento, el poder y la ética.

The German-born, Chilean author Norbert Lechner remains one of Latin America’s most prominent and creative social scientists. The last four years have seen a remarkable resurgence of democracy in the Southern Cone of the Americas. Military regimes have been replaced in Argentina (1983), Uruguay (1985), and Brazil (1985). Despite great interest in these new democracies, the role of the military in the process of transition has been under-theorized and under-researched. Alfred Stepan, one of the best-known analysts of the military in politics, examines some of the reasons for this neglect and takes a new look at themes raised in his earlier work on the state, the breakdown of democracy, and the military. The reader of this book will gain a fresh understanding of new democracies and democratic movements throughout the world and their attempts to understand and control the military. An earlier version of this book has been a controversial best seller in Brazil. To examine the Brazilian case, the author uses a variety of new archival material and interviews, with comparative data from Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, and Spain. Brazilian military leaders had consolidated their hold on governmental power by strengthening the military-crafted intelligence services, but they eventually found these same intelligence systems to be a formidable threat. Professor Stepan explains how redemocratization occurred as the military reached into the civil sector for allies in its struggle against the growing influence of the intelligence community. He also explores dissension within the military and the continuing conflicts between the military and the civilian government.
