El coronel Borso di Carminati llegó a Tarragona en 1821, después del fracaso de la revolución piamontesa contra las monarquías absolutas italianas. En España luchó contra los absolutistas catalanes. Después de la invasión de los Cien Mil Hijos de San Luis huyó a Londres. Participó en la revuelta de las Tres Jornadas de julio de París, que acabaron con la monarquía de Carlos X. Los emigrados italianos refugiados en Europa intentaron unificar Italia con ayuda de los liberales franceses. Tras esa nueva derrota, Borso embarcó en Ostende en dirección a las Azores, para restablecer los derechos de don Pedro I en el trono de Portugal, en la guerra civil entre absolutistas y liberales. En 1836 con una brigada portuguesa entró en España para combatir a los carlistas. En 1841 seria fusilado en Zaragoza por conspirar en contra de Espartero.
