This book answers this question by analysing studies of language endangerment and loss along with those of language change, revitalization and diversity. If, as we believe, the history of languages is the history of the construction of an ideal artefact that permits a specific interpretation of the linguistic reality and helps to approve and assimilate a certain zone of diversity, enabling the accumulation of collective historical knowledge and making us identify it with a social community and a territory, then it must be agreed that languages are extremely complex entities. The new linguistic diversity that cultural globalisation and recent population movements have installed in most traditional linguistic territories has probably put the ideology of the national language into a state of crisis and, as a consequence, has made the ancient, intrinsic diversity of all languages visible, at least to the extent that this is still possible. Nowadays, then, the old linguistic diversity of dialects, of parlances, of local lexicons and the cultural forms that are reflected in these, of varieties and previously unsuccessful linguistic entities has been given a new opportunity in a world where the cohesion of societies and the welfare of citizens must be guaranteed using all available means. Looked at this way, the intricacy of languages may even open up an opportunity for local economic and social development.

Durante los últimos cincuenta años, la hipótesis vascoiberista había sido puesta en entredicho, aceptándose únicamente por la mayor parte de los paleofilólogos e historiadores la existencia de algunas coincidencias entre las lenguas ibérica y vasca, Concomitancias que se consideraban producto de la aculturación, el azar o la proximidad geográfica. Los investigadores Antonio Arnáiz Villena y Jorge Alonso García han postulado desde la lingüística, la genética o de la hipótesis sahariana, elementos tan buenos como cualquier otro de los aportados por la arqueología o la historia, cuál era el origen étnico, lingüístico, cultural común de los íberos. Un parentesco, que puede ser ampliado a otros pueblos mediterráneos, que salieron del norte de Africa durante la retirada de los hielos del Holocénico. Relación que ha servido para abrir nuevas vías a la traducción de los archivos etruscos, hititas, sumerios, egipcios o de lineal A, pues probablemente emigraron de un Sáhara verde, que se convirtió en el mayor arenal del planeta. Gentes que se establecieron en torno al Marc Nostrum, creando una gran civilización que compartieron durante varios milenios. Hoy día, John T. Koch está traduciendo con una metodología muy similar a la nuestra desde el signario íbero-tartésico a las lenguas llamadas celtas-británicas: irlandés, galés, escocés y de Bretaña francesa. Es decir, trata al tartésico como una lengua céltica más. A nuestro juicio comete errores evidentes al tomar la transliteración reciente y artificiosa del tartésico de Correa y Rodríguez Ramos, desdeñando la primitiva de Gómez Moreno y Tovar, obtenida con mucho menos prejuicios. Aceptando que las lenguas celtas provienen del ibérico-tartésico, el probable origen de todas estas lenguas es Iberia, que, además, ha tenido una entrada genética y cultural adicional (probablemente importante) de gentes saharianas, cuando se establecieron las condiciones hiperáridas en el desierto hace unos cinco mil de años y posiblemente antes. La découverte au cours des années 2005 et 2006 sur le site archéologique de Veleia-Iruña, dans la région de Vitoria, province basque d'Alava, d'inscriptions rédigées, les unes manifestement en latin populaire et tardif, et les autres assurément en basque, ou plus exactement en « proto-basque », des inscriptions datant selon toute vraisemblance du IIIe siècle de notre ère, voire d'une période allant du IIe au IVe siècle, a déclenché en Espagne une polémique des plus curieuses. Cette polémique, qui vue de France, ou de quelque autre pays européen, pourra surprendre, tant sur la forme que sur le fond, le spécialiste mais également le simple curieux intéressé par ces questions savantes, a pris une ampleur inhabituelle dans le monde de la recherche scientifique, du moins telle qu'on la conçoit en Europe occidentale. En effet, le déroulement de cette affaire, dont la presse, principalement basque et espagnole, s'est largement emparée, est à bien des égards, comme nous allons le constater à présent, tout à fait extraordinaire.
