In recent years, Mexican films have received high acclaim and impressive box-office returns. Moreover, Mexico has the most advanced movie industry in the Spanish-speaking world, and its impact on Mexican culture and society cannot be overstated. Mexico's Cinema: A Century of Film and Filmmakers is a collection of fourteen essays that encompass the first 100 years of the cinema of Mexico. Included are original contributions written specifically for this title, plus a few classic pieces in the field of Mexican cinema studies never before available in English. These essays explore a variety of themes including race and ethnicity, gender issues, personalities, and the historical development of a national cinematic style. Each of the book's three sections-The Silent Cinema, The Golden Age, and The Contemporary Era-is preceded by a short introduction to the period and a presentation of the major themes addressed in the section. This insightful anthology is the first published study that includes pieces by Mexican and North American scholars, including a piece by the internationally acclaimed essayist Carlos Monsivais. Contributors include other acclaimed scholars and critics as well as young scholars who are currently making their mark in the area of film studies of Mexico. These authors represent various fields-community studies, film studies, cultural history, ethnic studies, and gender studies-making this volume an interdisciplinary resource, important for courses in Latin America and Third World cinema, Mexican history and culture, and Chicana/o and ethnic studies.

Memorias Del Sanatorio written by Héctor Vallés and has been published by AuthorHouse this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2005-09-15 with Fiction categories.

The story that unfolds in Memorias del Sanatorio has its beginnings in the mental vortex that engulfs Arnaldo Morales after the suicide of his father. There is no possible resurrection after that fact, and our main character is hospitalized in a quirky mental sanatorioum in Spain, where the sons and daughters of well to do in Latin American families, as well as of the Spanish bourgeois, are hospitalized with the hope of some miraculous cure of their mental illness from which they will continue to suffer in the clinic, year after year, in the hallways and the rooms of the Esquerdo The characters that inhabit these halls of the asylum are markedly interesting in their contorted psychologies, in their delusional systems, in the inventions of the imaginations that lead them somewhere that they do not remotely expect: the end of their shadows past the gray walls, the corridors they follow going nowhere through the center of the despair of their schizophrenias: the end of their delusions that do not provide with a way out. The writer has gotten his material for the novel from his own experience as he walked these corridors, and the streets that appear in the narrative; and of course from the experience of mental illness. One more important aspect of the narrative: The narrator find himself in the streets of Miami Beach throughout the novel, from where he recollects the thirty years past when the remembrances from the sanatorium took place. The world is going to end, like it happens in the end of every millennium, and a new imperator comes to MB to witnesses the executions of the insane.
