Que la historia es un gran río que recoge el tiempo humano colectivo, y que entre torrenteras y meandros arrastra a los hombres y sus obras es una imagen casi evidente para los que, durante los últimos doscientos años, hicieron de ella el tribunal de todo lo pasado y la justificación de todo lo presente y venidero. Claro que muchos la vieron, sobre todo en el XIX, el siglo del proceso, como un río creciente y, como corresponde a los grandes ríos, cada vez más poderoso y tranquilo, destinado a embalsarse a sí mismo en la etapa final de una humanidad ya definitivamente civilizada. Casi ninguno de los presentes en este libro, o en este tiempo, se ve ya en esa imagen –que siempre da la tranquilizadora ilusión de nadar a favor, o mejor aún, en contra de la corriente. Pero incluso si la mantenemos, hay que admitir que la imagen es inquietante, porque los ríos, revueltos o no, llevan de todo por sus fondos, y en ellos está, ahora sí, nadie lo dude, la historia entera de los ríos y las tierras que surcaron. Los llamados idealistas y los románticos, esos que pensaban en Europa en torno a 1800, coincidieron con el nacimiento de la nueva noción de historia y pensaron mucho sobre ella, sobre su carácter absoluto. Pero, a diferencia de quienes vinieron después, bucearon, fueron conscientes del fondo, especularon hacia arriba y hacia abajo –¿y si arriba, ay, en el techo de la caverna que cavamos para salir, hubiera precisamente un manto de agua que se nos viene encima, según cuenta el biógrafo Rosenkranz que fantaseaba Hegel una vez con sus alumnos? La historia, el estar en la historia, el ser sujetos en la historia provoca, por ello, mucho más que cuestiones eruditas de historiografía o preguntas consoladoras por el sentido de la historia. Excita, más bien, los nervios decisivos de la existencia individual, del conocimiento, del saber, de la política, de la libertad, en aquella época y en esta. Y sobre esa excitación, leyendo a aquellos autores, se escriben los textos de este libro.

Mucho se ha escrito de la Escuela Náutica de Mazatlán y referente al egregio marino "Capitán de Altura Antonio Gómez Maqueo"; un poco aquí, otro tanto más allá. La investigación del Ing. Julio Alfonso Ruiz Ramírez contabiliza abundantes horas en entrevistas con marinos de todas las edades y estratos sociales, revisión de viejas y gastadas hojas en el archivo municipal, registros de las sesiones del cabildo de antaño en busca de pistas sobre fechas, y búsquedas que dieran mayor luz a la fundación de la escuela o sobre el siempre evasivo pasado del capitán. Su pesquisa incluyó visitas a los cementerios, incluso viajes: a México y al lugar de nacimiento del marino, oriundo de Orizaba; todo ello para perfilar mejor sus rasgos y personalidad. Hurgar en el pasado es difícil, y más cuando los coterráneos de la persona investigada pasaron a mejor vida. El trabajo que emprendió Julio es con la finalidad de dejar la menor cantidad de lagunas posibles y poder así sacar a relucir los pormenores de su amada escuela y del marino que tanto tuvo que ver en su reapertura y fortalecimiento. Su compendio es un registro ameno cuya intención es la de poder llegar a los lectores interesados en descubrir las fases de la fundación de su alma mater y de conocer mejor a la persona que la consolidó. Dangerous Speech is the first systematic treatment of blasphemous speech in colonial Mexico. This engaging social history examines the representation of blasphemy as a sin and a crime, and its repression by the Spanish Inquisition. The Spanish colonists viewed blasphemy not only as an insult against God but also as a dangerous misrepresentation of the deity, which could call down his wrath in a ruinous assault on the imperial enterprise. Why then, asks Villa-Flores, did Spaniards dare to blaspheme? Having mined the period’s moral literature—philosophical works as well as royal decrees and Inquisition treatises and trial records in Spanish, Mexican, and U.S. archives and research libraries—Villa-Flores deftly interweaves images of daily life in colonial Mexico with vivid descriptions of human interactions to illustrate the complexity of a culture profoundly influenced by the Catholic Church. In entertaining and sometimes horrifying vignettes, the reader comes face to face with individuals who used language to assert or manipulate their identities within that repressive society. Villa-Flores offers an innovative interpretation of the social uses of blasphemous speech by focusing on specific groups—conquistadors, Spanish settlers, Spanish women, and slaves of both genders—as a lens to examine race, class, and gender relations in colonial Mexico.
