La gran crisis económica, cuyo arranque puede ubicarse en el hundimiento del banco de inversión Lehman Brothers el 15 de septiembre de 2008, constituye un fenómeno complejo que tardará años en ser convenientemente diseccionado. Sin embargo, puede asegurarse ya que lo sucedido a partir de la crisis de las subprime fue el colapso súbito del modelo neoliberal, que, a fuerza de suprimir regulaciones y controles, permitió el abuso avaricioso de los gestores desaprensivos del sistema financiero, que a la postre lo llevaron a la quiebra. La descarada hegemonía intelectual de la derecha le ha permitido eludir en buena parte ante la opinión pública la responsabilidad evidente en todo esto. El pensamiento conservador, emboscado tras el parapeto de la ortodoxia llevada a extremos fundamentalistas, tiene la pretensión de salir indemne del desastre y el cinismo de los neoliberales es tal que culpan ahora a los gobernantes socialdemócratas del crash del sistema financiero que ha traído la recesión. La crisis ha puesto de relieve la necesidad de mantener una opción ideológica partidaria de que el Estado conserve un papel definido como promotor y prestatario de los grandes servicios públicos, y como regulador de diversas actividades y mercados que inciden decisivamente en el bienestar colectivo. La recuperación de esta bipolaridad, en un mundo en que el pensamiento conservador ha acuñado potentes axiomas que nunca han sido demostrados y ha actuado sobre el lenguaje y los marcos ideológicos para ponerlos a su merced, requiere un esfuerzo positivo de razón y de voluntad. Un esfuerzo que reconstruya íntegramente el centro-izquierda y que lleve a las sociedades desarrolladas de nuestros países a la convicción de que, en general, los problemas políticos y sociales tienen más de una única solución posible.
