Social processes and the nature of language variation have driven sibilant variation across the Spanish-speaking world. This book explores the current state of Spanish sibilants and their dialectal variations. Focusing on different processes undergone by sibilants in Spanish (e.g., voicing, devoicing, weakening, aspiration, elision) in various geographical areas and language contact situations, each chapter offers an analysis on a unique sociolinguistic case from different formal, experimental, and data-based approaches. Die Arbeit behandelt die Revalorisierung und diskursive Konstruktion des Andalusischen im Spannungsfeld von Sprache, Dialekt und lokalen Mundarten. Bisher fehlt es in der hispanistischen Sprachwissenschaft an einer Theorie und an Methoden, um sprachliche Varietäten als diskursiv konstruierte Entitäten zu begreifen und die Rolle sozialer Akteure in den Konstruktionsprozessen zu berücksichtigen. Traditionellere Untersuchungen basieren oftmals auf einer positivistisch geprägten Grundorientierung, durch die Varietäten als ontologischer Fakt dargestellt wurden. Um diese Forschungslücke zu schließen, geht die Arbeit von epistemologischen Grundannahmen der Variationslinguistik sowie der linguistischen Anthropologie aus und bettet die Studie in den theoretischen Rahmen des enregisterment-Ansatzes. Mit diesem interdisziplinären Ansatz verfolgt die Arbeit das Ziel, Diskurse zu identifizieren, in denen das Andalusische als abgegrenzte Einheit konstruiert wird, sowie die Valorisierung in ihnen zu analysieren. Auf Grundlage dieser neuentwickelten Methodologie werden Konstruktionsprozesse zur diskursiven Varietät des Andalusischen mit ihren Bewertungen sowohl empirisch als auch qualitativ untersucht.

Der Fokus dieser Arbeit liegt auf der Untersuchung des Sprachbewusstseins der jungen Andalusier in Cádiz. Die Rolle der Kultur und die Aufnahme der Varietät in der Öffentlichkeit stehen hierbei im Mittelpunkt. Um der empirischen Untersuchung eine Grundlage zu schaffen, werden zunächst Forschungen über die andalusische Varietät in den letzten Jahrzehnten aufgeführt, für die sich mit der Einführung des Autonomiestatus und eines für alle zugänglichen Bildungssystems vieles verändert hat. Es werden aktuelle soziolinguistische Themen erörtert, nämlich die Normalisierung sowie die Nivellierung des Andalusischen, die sich damit beschäftigen, der Sprechweise eine Norm zu verleihen. Das Thema des Sprachbewusstseins und der sprachlichen Identität bereitet die empirische Studie vor: Hierzu wird zuerst der Terminus der Sprachidentität erläutert und später auf die andalusische Varietät angewendet. Auch das umstrittene Konzept des andalusischen Sprachbewusstseins wird diskutiert. Bis heute kämpft die andalusische Sprechweise gegen Vorurteile des schlechten Ansehens, worunter ebenfalls das Sprachbewusstsein leidet, das sich nach und nach von dem „sprachlichen Minderwertigkeitskomplex“ zu befreien scheint. Die empirische Untersuchung zeigt ein spannendes Ergebnis auf.
