Esta obra originalmente se escribió como tesis para el programa de maestría en historia y teoría del arte y la arquitectura de la Universidad Nacional de Colombia. Inició con el interés de trazar un panorama del arte en la década de los setenta, período poco analizado pero esencial para la comprensión de las tendencias artísticas a finales del siglo XX. El tema de la investigación se constituyó en el análisis problemático de un período que se inicia en 1968, año de realización de Políptico de Luís Caballero, y que culmina en 1980, año de realización de Grano de Miguel Ángel Rojas. El trabajo se divide en cuatro partes: la primera traza un panorama general de los años setenta, período que se destacó por la variedad y por la cantidad de tendencias simultáneas que señalaron el cambio general en la cultura artística colombiana. En la segunda parte se construye un marco teórico para abordar la problemática del arte, atendiendo a los detalles de dicho cambio sin perder de vista la totalidad; aquí se desarrolla la teoría de ?la muerte del arte? (llamada por G. Vattimo ?el crepúsculo del arte?), que se refiere a ese deslizarse hacia otros ámbitos, caracterizado por una pérdida de énfasis que, en su aspecto progresivo, remite a la divisa vanguardista de reintegrar el arte a la vida, y, en su aspecto regresivo, a la pérdida de sustancia característica de una época en la que la experiencia del mundo se reduce a una serie de reflejos. Así, entre estos dos polos de tensión se desarrollaron las prácticas artísticas de la década que, de hecho, se identificó por marcar un tono revolucionario en sus comienzos y un reflujo conservador en su final.

She describes the rise of performance art in the context of feminism, HIV-activism, and human right movements, taking a close look at the work of Diamela Eltit and Raúl Zurita from Chile, León Ferrari and Liliana Maresca from Argentina, and Marcos Kurtycz, the No Grupo art collective, and Proceso Pentágono from Mexico. The comparative study of the work of these artists attests to a performative turn in Latin American art during the 1980s that, like photography and film before, recast the artistic field as a whole, changing the ways in which we perceive art and understand its role in society.
