El álbum de familia es un género muy poco estudiado dentro del campo de los estudios visuales en Puerto Rico. Como nos enseña Armando Silva, se trata de la conjunción de un sujeto (la familia), un medio de documentación (la fotografía) y un medio de organización y archivo (el álbum). Esta conjunción se confabula para preservar y a la vez representar un relato, una narrativa de un pasado colectivo, selectivo y añorado. Desde sus inicios, la fotografía ha validado, por su naturaleza ontológicamente indicial, la existencia de lo pasado. La imagen fotográfica documenta, atestigua, fuera de toda duda, sobre la existencia del ser, replicando el noema barthesiano: eso existió, eso fue así. Gracias a la fotografía, en las próximas páginas nos adentraremos en ese vórtice del tiempo, a través de esos patios y balcones, tras el rastro de la memoria y los recuerdos de la familia Brunet-Calaf del Manatí de principios de siglo XX.

Este trabajo representa una aproximación al "álbum de familia" como artefacto cultural, como una construcción social de intencionalidades diversas, pero que podemos resumir en torno a los objetivos de memoria y cohesión del grupo familiar. Esto se pretende lograr a través de la preservación, significación y conmemoración de personas, eventos y, sobre todo, de rituales socio-culturales que alimentan y brindan un hilo conductor a dicha cohesión, más allá de la cotidianidad. El álbum de familia es un singular artefacto que nos da acceso a un corpus visual cargado de historia, de prácticas culturales, de mentalidades, emociones, afectos - en este caso, relativo a una de las familias de la élite manatieña de fines de siglo XIX e inicios del XX.
