A Cinema of Poetry brings Italian film studies into dialogue with fields outside its usual purview by showing how films can contribute to our understanding of aesthetic questions that stretch back to Homer. Joseph Luzzi considers the relation between film and literature, especially the cinematic adaptation of literary sources and, more generally, the fields of rhetoric, media studies, and modern Italian culture. The book balances theoretical inquiry with close readings of films by the masters of Italian cinema: Roberto Rossellini, Vittorio De Sica, Luchino Visconti, Michelangelo Antonioni, Federico Fellini, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Bernardo Bertolucci, and others. Luzzi's study is the first to show how Italian filmmakers address such crucial aesthetic issues as the nature of the chorus, the relation between symbol and allegory, the literary prehistory of montage, and the place of poetry in cinematic expression—what Pasolini called the "cinema of poetry." While Luzzi establishes how certain qualities of film—its link with technological processes, capacity for mass distribution, synthetic virtues (and vices) as the so-called total art—have reshaped centuries-long debates, A Cinema of Poetry also explores what is specific to the Italian art film and, more broadly, Italian cinematic history. Y el cine cuenta muy a menudo con la medicina porque trabaja con experiencias rutinarias de salud y enfermedad, sus miedos y sus osadías, sus servidumbres y sus rebeldías. La medicina y el cine caminan de la mano con la experiencia cotidiana de la muerte y de la vida. Y la medicina es cine porque es soñar, cuestionar y luchar, como lo es sufrir, morir y amar. Entendemos por República de Weimar el período de la historia de Alemania comprendido entre los años 1918 y 1933. Durante estos años se produjo un importante desarrollo de las artes, entre las que destacó el cine por su capacidad para llegar a las masas. Durante la República de Weimar la Medicina ocupó un papel fundamental en la nueva sociedad, influyendo de forma determinante en aspectos como la política (salud pública), sociedad (libertades individuales) y la cultura (psicoanálisis). En el momento actual no existen estudios historiográficos en los que se haya realizado un análisis sistemático de los filmes de Weimar desde la perspectiva de la Medicina. La hipótesis de este trabajo es que durante la República de Weimar existió una relación estrecha y constante entre el cine y la Medicina. El objetivo principal de este trabajo de investigación es analizar dicha relación. A partir de los resultados obtenidos, las conclusiones de este trabajo de investigación son las siguientes: 1.Existen numerosos ejemplos que permiten afirmar que durante el periodo de la República de Weimar se estableció una relación estrecha entre la Medicina y el cine. 2.Los cineastas presentan la imagen del médico por tres vías: En función de sus experiencias personales como pacientes, para representar nuevos modelos sociosanitarios desarrollados durante el periodo republicano o recurriendo a la experiencia médica para fundamentar los hechos analizados en sus películas. 3.La Medicina recurre al cine por su gran alcance social por tres motivos principales: Para difundir mensajes médicos entre la población, para legitimar su actividad frente a la imagen negativa proyectada por determinados filmes, para promocionar las actividades clínicas de las instituciones que representan o para colaborar con los artistas en el desarrollo de películas de alto interés social promovidas por los estudios cinematográficos.

Este libro quiere crear una reflexión en torno al uso, creación y elaboración de materiales audiovisuales –documentales, películas, programas televisivos, anuncios y series de televisión– en la didáctica e investigación de las ciencias de la salud y ciencias sociales.
