El mar interior comienza con una bicicleta chocando contra un tranvía. El ciclista es Milton, un joven periodista argentino. «Con una buena indemnización, desempleado, una profesión en vías de extinción y un pasaporte europeo», Milton acaba de instalarse en Ámsterdam con su pareja, una música becada en un prestigioso conservatorio. Mientras ella pasa los días afuera, él sostiene una rutina solitaria: se ocupa obsesivamente de las tareas domésticas, cuida la planta monstruosa con la que están obligados a convivir, practica natación varias veces por semana y pedalea por la ciudad mientras observa el nuevo mundo que los rodea. Arrojado a una tierra extraña en la que todavía no logra echar raíz, Milton no solo tiene que lidiar con sus prejuicios hacia el país que mal o bien lo ha recibido, con las dificultades idiomáticas y la necesidad de conocer gente y hacerse amigos. También necesita, con urgencia, conseguir un trabajo, ahora que los medios argentinos se muestran cada vez más renuentes a publicar sus artículos. Matías Capelli combina sus grandes dotes de narrador y de cronista para proponer una reflexión sobre la intimidad y los registros de lo íntimo, una de las tantas máscaras que puede adoptar la literatura. Como un etnógrafo alucinado, en su segunda novela cuenta con humor e inteligencia la historia de un personaje que encuentra, en el corazón de la extranjería, una inesperada forma de liberación.
